I spoke with a lawyer, he could write a letter, but chances are they'd send back a ton of letters to generate billing on his end, he said some of the agencies have it down to a science. They want whatever money it is and have nothing else to do but stick it to you to collect. He did tell me from this point on to document every phone call whether the number is identified or not. He also added 'is a $200 collection that can be explained pretty easily worth pursuing?' I don't know, my credit it pretty clean now but I'd like to break in to the mid 700's or higher...I don't think this will help esp the more they update it.

Either way it's not his profession and he would need to refer me to a credit type of lawyer. For $200 it's not worth it. The minimum I can retain another lawyer around here is about $250, that will get me a consultation and perhaps a letter shot off. If there is an easy way to get it settled I'd be open to hear it. I may call the other attorney up and see what he'd just charge to advise me...but I have yet to meet an attorney I didn't know do that and I can understand it, they paid big bucks for their education and experience.

Retaining a lawyer to dispute that sum isn't worthwhile. However, to protect your good credit, go to www.creditnet.com for more information. Some of those people on that discussion board is pretty experienced with dealing with collection agencies and credit reporting agencies. Some have even made good money out of suing collection agencies and the like just to clear their good name and stick it to these bastards. I suggest that you go ask for those people's advice..

Instead of paying $200, you can actually make some money off these dirty rotten bastards.

How long will it take you to repair the damage to your credit? How much money will you lose in interest on loans because of that bad mark?

I guess for me it reallly depends on how much the lawyer would cost.
