anyone have experience with 3800+ Newcastle?

I now have a full time job, and with all my other hobbies...overclocking may be a "thing of a past" for me. I sold my overclocking setup in favor of a setup that will be pretty fast completely stock. Anyone have experience with a 3800+ newcastle? I know that it runs 2.4ghz stock at 200x12. Would this be much slower in terms of performance when compared to a 3200+ overclocked at 240x10 or 250x10? I can now use much tigher ram timings (2-2-2-5 instead of 2.5-3-3-7), which I'm guessing will help.

Also, if I did decide to overclock the 3800+, would it go much higher than the typical 3000-3200+ which seem to top out around 2.5-2.6ghz?

If you want a good performer that "if I did decide to overclock" then get a San Diego, not a Newcastle.

haha...I would if I bought new. But I got in on a used 3800+ for $200. I couldn't pass it up. 😉

I'm running the 3800 Newcastle. I can overclock it up to 108% using the ASUS windows overclocking utility--110% is more than the CPU can handle. The CPU is stable and fast.

That being said, I'm dissatisfied with how hot the 3800 Newcastle runs even when not overclocked. 48C at idle is pretty normal and I can hit 55C when running Battlefield 2. Although that's well within the tolerance ranges, that strikes me as hot considering that my ambient is well within room temperature and my interntals are in the high 20s. I'm using a Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu LED CPU cooler and I've got three 120mm case fans going, so I think that's awfully hot. It wouldn't matter except I've got to run all the fans at full power to keep my temps down and the ensuing racket is distracting.

You can get a 3800 Venice with the 90mm core that's going to run cooler than the Newcastle.

so 2.6ghz? That's not bad. Like I said...chances are, I may not even overclock at all. As for the temps, I have a XP-90 which has been keeping most processors very cool, and hopefully will work well with this one too. I also keep it pretty cool in my condo. 55 degrees on load is not bad, but 48decrees idle seems pretty high.

I have the 3800+ and it does run kind of hot, but that is just due to the Newcastle core.
I had a 3000+ Winnie and I would defintiely rather have this. It will OC some (I think 2.6 is reasonable, but 2.8 would be unlikely without extreme cooling), but that's not why someone should buy this chip.
The only reason I have mine is that it was an RMA replacment for my 3000+ winnie that died after a few hours of service. AMD didn't have any winchesters in stock, and they ran out of 3500+ Newcastle's, so I got a 3800+ instead. I defintely didn't complain. 🙂
Anyways, great chip for running at stock speed or small OC.

It depends on the ambient/case temp and case air flow.
When my case temp was near 35C, mine ran 38 completely idle, 50C load.
With summer, my case temp has risen to 41C, so the CPU runs 45C idle, 54C load.

Of course this was in a Sonata that has terrible air flow.

i have one and im getting my new HSF in but i have a stock one at the moment and i idle at 38-42 and load is like 55 for games but prime is like 60+ im running it at 12 x 206 i can go 209 but it gets too hot for prime95 so yea..... what multiplier do yall run? 11? 10? which is better ?we need a oficial 3800 newcastle page
