My mom has been having these weird attacks, sometimes she freezes up and has crazy, worrisom thoughts (sounded like an anxiety attack) and other times she looks like a zombie for a minute.

Doctor said it was pre-diabetes but also prescribed Xanax which really did turn her into a zombie 24/7. So we got a blood sugar meter from the drug store to see what the hell was going on.

The other week she had an attack and the blood sugar was 64 mg or whatever units you call it. She had one just now and it was 193, which I looked up and found to be acute hyperglycemia. So, she's oscillating between hypo- and hyperglycemia?

She's got another dr.'s appt. soon to discuss the numbers, but I'd like to know if anyone else would know what's going on.

I'm not sure which units he uses, but my girlfriend's little brother is diabetic. 64 is very low, especially if you've eaten in the past few hours. 193 however isn't that high. He was at 800 a few years ago, the night he went to the ER and found out he was diabetic. He's regularly at 200+ after having a decent sized meal and he is completely healthy.

Normal human blood sugar levels are between 80 & 120mg/dl. Hyperglycemia takes a long time to develop symptoms, primarily diabetic coma caused by ketoacidosis. Basically there's plenty of insulin in the blood stream, but no glucose so the body burns fat for energy causing an acid build up the blood stream and polyuria, which is excessive urination to rid the body of excess glucose. Again, that takes quite a long time to happen. Since this was a rapid onset to me it seems like insulin shock, too much insulin in her system, but not enough glucose to keep her running. When it happened had she eaten at all that day or was she doing anything physically strenuous for long periods of time? She very may well be developing diabetes, however without further testing by her doctor there's no real way to be sure.

Pre-Diabetes It is quite common in the US. Time to be proactive and take action for your Mom, it's more serious than previously thought, but she can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes if she takes action now (wakeup call)

She ate about 2 hours before the event, no strenuous activity.

^thanks for the pre-diabetes link.

Hmm, plenty of glucose in her system then. It's possible she's developing type 2 diabetes. Definitely keep on top of it and make sure her doctor checks out all posibilites.

One of my most common calls as a medic was for diabetic reasons.

Do what you are doing and closely monitor her blood sugar. (And chart it.)

With type two diabetes, if you arent careful you can have just as many problems with to low of blood sugar.

To the person that says 193 isnt to high. Its HIGH, but it could be worse. Long term, anything outside the normal levels will lead to medical problems down the road.

Any Dr will tell you that your gf little brother isnt sticking to a proper diabetic diet if hes regularly testing over 200. He may not have any medical problems now, but long term its going to damage his body.

That depends. if he's hitting over 200 pre-meal, that's pretty bad. 45 min after eating alot of carbohydrates, that's normal. There really is no way to prevent brief spikes after eating (other than not eating carbs) - there's no insulin that acts fast enough. I regularly spike into that range, and my last A1C was 6.2 (humalog insulin pump)
