My car (1992 Acura Integra - fuel injection) just broke down on the road while driving - the fuel light was on and I am assuming I ran out of gas (though I thought I had at least another 50km left in the tank....).

I went and got another 8L (2G) of gas and put it in the tank. The engine turns over, but the car will not start no matter what I do. The gas gauge shows an eighth of a tank of gas.

Does anyone know if a fuel injection engine is picky about running out of gas? Is it possible that the injectors are now clogged with crud? Is there something special that needs to be done to get it going?

I sure hope this is related to running out of gas and not a more serious engine problem...

UPDATE: It was the ignition coil - not too bad to fix... :)

you need to get out and lift the rear end up a few feet, so the new gas gets to the engine.

I have heard (don't know if this is true) that if you run out of gas with certain cars, the fuel pump burns out, and must be replaced.

Could be an urban legend, but it may explain your problem.

Running out of gas in a EFI engine spells trouble for the fuel pump system. If out of gas happen often to you, then the fuel pump maybe toast.

probably clogged the fuel filter. Try that first.

If you are brave open up the thottle body hose and spray some "starter" fluid into it. be careful, that stuff is highly explosive, and many times will backfire back out with a cool flame.

Well - I have never run out of fuel with this vehicle (not entirely convinced I did this time...). However, I do run it to the brink about 1 time per week (i.e., the fuel light is on for about 50km). My guess is that it is a mucked up fuel filter. How do I clean this if it is a filter??

<< i hope you tried applying some pressure to the gas pedal when starting it. >>

Wrong - not needed with FI

If you have run out many times, the fuel pump may be toast. It's under your back seat.

A couple of things to look for:

After the key's off for 30-45 seconds, turn the key to "ON", you may be able to hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds.

You can locate the test fitting on the fuel rail, it may look like an air fitting from a tire. Depress the "needle", gas should spurt out. **WARNING - DO NOT BLOW YOURSELF UP! ** Use common sense. You should have pressure 10 seconds or so after turning the key.

When the FP died on my car, I got nada out of the schrader valve. (Fuel rail test point)

How many miles on it? You may have a collapsed fuel sock (Sort of a crude strainer-type filter in the tank on the bottom of the fuel pump), or a clogged fuel filter, both are unlikely though. :(

Yea, good suggestion. You probably sucked up all of the crap on the bottom of the tank. The filter can be anywhere, I'm not familiar with that car.

You may have a collapsed fuel sock

When I pulled the old pump on one of my cars, the sock was collapsed - sucked flat in the
middle at the fuel pump intake - but it still functioned.. it wasn't all tha tgunked up.

get the car towed and get it into a mechanic

I let my Mazda MX6 get too low, and burned up my pump. Damn thing was almost $350 retail. Thank god I have a bud who's a mechanic, and give me his discount.

One thing you've got to remember is that by letting the fuel get low on a FI car, not only are you risking it picking up crud and ruining it that way, but the gas actually cools the pump too. So no gas=no cooling.

My guess is fuel pump too. :(
