Anyone have bamboo trees?

Looking to put some clumping, non-creeping bamboo trees around my pool. Not a fan of palm trees, so I thought bamboo would be a good alternative. Fast growing, provide privacy and good shade. They have non-creeping versions so I don't have to worry about them taking over my lawn after a year or two.

Was wondering how much maintenance they need, shedding of leaves, hartiness, disease control, etc.

I don't have any but my neighbor does. He has a good 4-5ft deep grove of them planted between him and the road. You can not see the road they are so thick and it helps with traffic noise. Have not seen them get any bugs/disease, they do shed a bit but it creates a nice bed of leaves under them. This is in Alabama, it is hot/humid so they grow like mad. I would plant some as a fence if I had a house and backyard.

my father put bamboo next to our pool. if you really feel like cleaning your skimmers every day then it'll be great for you. lots of leaves right into the pool

my sister down in Brenaham tx has what you are talking about. the only drawback are the zillions of leaves that get into the pool.

damn it! The wind will be blowing straight through the trees and across the pool, dumping them in there.

Do any of you know what type of bamboo trees they are.

it makes a great privacy fence... I was going to mention the creeping; our neighbors had bamboo when I was a little kid. My parents tried (and my mom still tries to this day) to get rid of the bamboo from our yard. Nothing seems to kill the stuff. You may think it's gone, but then it's back.
