anyone have any tips for stretching a wifi network across a large house?

I've got my office and the dsl modem up on the second floor of our house, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to stretch it for even coverage down to the basement and possibly even out to the garage... currently, we get a "low" connection and frequent disconnects in the basement and no connection whatsoever outside in the back yard.

running cables through the walls is, unfortunately, not an option at this point.

anyone have any tips? I was thinking about a repeater or something, but are they really effective or are they just a money sink?

I've got a Belkin Pre-N in my basement and my son's computer gets full speed on what is essentially the 3rd floor. Hard to find the Pre-N's but draft N is available.

thanks  I'm thinking about snagging the belkin pre-N router and card on amazon.... unlike a repeater, a new router would be something I'd still have a use for when I move out of this house and back into an apartment or condo.
