Anyone have any suggestion on making this computer cheaper?

It all depends on what you NEED. Do you need a plextor CDRW to burn cds or something cheaper like Lite-on which can be about 100 bucks cheaper. You need the Geforce3 Ti500 or could you settle for a Geforce3 Ti200 which is 180 bucks cheaper. Need the Audigy sound or could you settle for a sound blaster live 5.1 value for 50 bucks cheaper. Figure out what you really NEED and what you could shave off and work from there.

Hmm...

1. Why are you buying the latest CPU? Go with Athlon XP 1700+, it's only a 5% slower than 1800+, and costs a LOT less. Of course, in actual applications the CPU difference is more like 2-3%

2. Unless you're overclocking, just buy Crucial 2x256 PC2100 for $75 or so.

3. Why do you need the most expensive (Herc Prophet) videocard? Get any GeForce3 Ti 500, for about $50 less

4. Get the LiteOn 24x10x40 for $110

5. 2 HDs 40 GB each?! Why not a single 80 GB 7200? A little slower (than the RAIDed 2x40, so what)

6. Sparkle power supply? How about Enermax 465 VE-FC?..

** Edit: you're forgetting a heat sink that will take your "1900+" even faster (I assume you'll be overclocking since you're getting PC-2400 memory)... So add $30 or more for a good cooler.

** Also, You can buy a good old GeForce3 - it's only 5-10% slower than the Ti 500

Christoph,

I DEFINATELY could not go without the Geforce 3 Ti500, that's a must. As for the sound card, I could downgrade that but it wouldn't take much off.

VbBoy,

1. I guess I'll just have to see what holiday season prices are. I might do that though.

2. Good idea also, will consider.

3. Which ones are good?

4. I might get the Lite-On but I will probably stick with the Plextor.

5. Do you know where I could find a 80GB IBM Deskstar?

6. Will consider, don't know much about PSUs.

Just find some better prices. Like vbboy said look into a deffrent power supply. And look at other geforce3 ti 500's. By the time christmas comes around you will easly be able to find some cheaper that perfrom better.

And where are you getting the money from !!!! 🙂 I wish I got 2500 for christmas. I get 200 at the most. I wish I wasnt so poor. Hehe.

Another thing 52 dollars for winxp from microsoft. HUH?

I found a 75gig 7200 rpm IMB hd. It was 239 plus 13 for shipping. Why not get a maxtor? You can get a 81gig for only 179. Thats the only brand of hd that I have not had die on me.

Also I know there are some better prices out there. Newegg is a nice site and all, and they have some good deals but if you look around enough you can find sites that have great prices on just hd's or just cpu's. You can save a lot of money that way.

All I know is that computer is going to rock!!!!

Case: If you're not doing overclocking, you don't really need the lian case. You can get an Antec SX840 or SX1040 w/ 400W antec PWR SUPPLY for about $135 shipped.

CPU: Athlon XP 1900+??? They aren't even out yet. Granted that they might be out by christmas, but even if they are, they will be a sh!tload of $$$. I'd get the 1800+ XP if I we're you. By christmas it will easily be under $200.

Motherboard: This is a good choice, even though it will probably be about twice as much as the Shuttle kt266a board, and you probably won't gain alot from it... but if you gotta the the absolute best of something, it mine as well be the motherboard!

Memory: No point in getting corsair unless your heavily overclocking. Why not get some PC2700 DDRAM?? I see them starting to come out, they we're listed at pricewatch, and they are only $50 each (for 256mb).

Keyboard: I've always had it in my mind that "a keyboard, is a keyboard". I buy generic keyboards for $6.99 from my local store, and they kick @$$, not the mouse on the other hand... [read next line]

Mouse: great choice! heh. May I suggest an optical mouse instead? The Microsoft Intelli-Mouse Optical is great. I personally have a logitech optical, but I would rather have a microsoft, even though logitech kicks ass.

Monitor: Not many comments here, good choice, nice monitor.

Video Card: No need for a GeForce3 Ti-500. Trust me dude, you will notice virtually no difference (like what, %6?) between the Ti-500 and Ti-200 except the price!!! In most games. Get the ti-200 and overclock it.

Sound Card: Good sound card, good choice. Money well spent.

CD/RW: Ewww, plextor. Why don't you just buy a Lite-On, scrap the name off the front of it, and buy a sticker that says "Plextor" on it. After all, your paying for a name arent you? Lite-On kicks major ass, my next purchase is gonna be a Lite-On 16x10x40 CD/RW and then a 16x Lite-On DVD. Get the Lite-On, unless you REALLY like the name "Plextor".

DVD: Good choice, gotta love slot-loads!!! Now where is the matching slot-load CD/RW???

Dial Up: Why do you need the best modem? A US Robotics? You won't notice much difference between it and a cable modem, besides, something tells me you wont be using it... your computer kicks too much ass to have a crappy 56k modem on it. Dont buy it, wasted money.

Cable: Not much comments on this one, I dont know much about cable modems.... I own a "terayon" modem that my cable company gave me for free, and it kicks ass.

Ethernet Card: No comment

Floppy Drive: If I commented on this, I would need help... LOL

Speakers: This one really got to me (calm down acid). $300 for speakers!!!??? What are you running, a fricking studio? This is wasted money in my opinion. Get a 5-peice system for like, $75 or something, no need to spend $290 on it.

OS: What can I say? Go XP!

Looking over your stuff it seems like your just trying to buy the best. Just remember, the most expensive doesnt always mean the best. When your cutting $250 off the price, get rid of the little things you dont need, like the "Plextor" name and the hella expensive "Speakers". Also... sorry if my comments were a bit annoying, but damn boy, I will never own $300 speakers LOL.

GOOD LUCK,
Acid

RemyCanad,

The Win XP for $52 is a special deal I found.
I'm getting a lot of stuff from NewEgg for one reason: shipping.

Acid16,

I gotta have the speakers! Those babies are awesome!

Seriously though, I might get the Logitech Z-506s but I haven't heard much about them. They're 4.1 speakers and they're $199. Plus judging by the way IGN talked, they blew the ProMedias away.

Specs updated.

i would scrap the promedias and get the ba4800's for less than half the price (~$130). i would also get a philips AE or santa cruz sound card for ~$60. i also second getting the sx1040 or sx840 , its about $115 and comes with the best 400 watt PS in my opinion (antec pp412x). also, good ol' $35 crucial pc2100 will oc just fine to that corsair stick. no need to pay extra for it. also, i would either get the visiontek ti500 for ~$320, they seem to have the best 2d. ive heard bad things about the hercules cards and 2d quality.

I want a slot load cd/rw!!! I don't know if there are any out right now, i havent heard of any. They gotta make one though, then maybe ill buy the SX1040 case (with the cool cover) hehe. About the speakers, far be it from me to tell ya what to buy, im just giving you suggestions dude, but if it were me, I would beable to put a system together for only $1250 that would beable to come within around %5 of most benchmarks that your $2500 cpu will do. If your just buying it to brag to your friends, thats nuts, because.... 6 months after you buy it, it will start sucking, and then it wont be the best on the block. Why not spend $1250 now and get a computer that is virtually indentical without all the bells and whistles, and then upgrade it again in 6-12 months. I would rather have an "Awesome computer" for 2 years, than have a "Hella sweet ass computer" for 1 year. Make sense? Man, im on acid... lol

Actually, If I got different speakers then I'm going with the Logitech Z-506s. Just gotta read some more reviews.
I want the Audigy because I loved my Live! so much. The Live! was my favorite card I've ever had.
I want the Lian-Li cause I've heard such good things about it and how nice everything fits inside it a, and how durable it is, etc.
Don't know much about PSUs, gotta check that out.
I think I may go with the Visiontek. 2d is pretty damn important to me.

dont go with lian li is does not run cooler IMO it does have nice features but not worth the extra $$$ go with antec 1040b for 130 and 400 watt antec (looks a lot cooler IMO)

with the Audigy dont get the platinum go platinum ex for 210 or 70 for OEM the platinum live drive thingy sux compared to the Ex's external

go with crucial for DDR

monitor was a good choice

scrap the dialup modem, you have cable duhh

liteon 24x is good as plextor

DVD is good

visiontek/gainward/elsa for GF3 but NOT HERC

(also consider radeon 8500)

i think the Epox 8kha+ will suit your O/C needs as well a abit and epox has better QC

i like maxtor HD's but that is personal preference

i luv my Boston BA4800's speakerwise www.3dsoundsurge.com for reviews

just a suggestion, why don't you just get the Altec Lansing 880 one? It's 5.1 speaker and it's a damn nice one. The price I think is around $180. Not sure about the price but I think it's around that....

Recently I posted in another post what I'm getting:

MEMORY: 2x Corsair 512MB DDR RAM (1GB Total)
Motherboard: ASUS A7V266 Motherboard
Hard Drive: Western Digital 100GB ATA/100 7200RPM
CD/DVD: Pioneer 16x/40x DVD/CD Drive Slot-Loading
CD-R/W: LITE-ON LTR-24102B-01 24x10x40 CDRW
Video: Gainward/CARDEXPERT GEFORCE3 POWERPAK GOLDEN SAMPLE
Sound: SoundBlaster Audigy
NIC: Netgear 10/100
Floppy: Mitsumi 1.44

Case: Cooler Master ATC-101-SX2 (Aluminum)
Power: ENERMAX EG465P-VE(FC. 431W

My total price after shipping AND tax (damn I hate living in CA sometimes) is $1769.33. I don't have a monitor though. And I haven't added prices for chipset and ram cooling. I don't think the Audigy Platinum is really necessary, unless you are big big audio freak. You could also cut back on silly things like keyboard, and mouse. Unless you are totally into that kind of stuff, paying $85 for a keyboard/mouse is silly. Speakers for $200 is just rediculous to me. PC sound is never as good as a real hi-fi system, so why bother. For games and such just get a $30-75 subwoofer/satellites combo. Where are you buying Windows XP professional for $52???
