I was looking to get some home automation for our house including some security features. Just curious if anyone has any and what you think of them? X10 has some cool looking stuff but is it junk for what you pay?

Thanks.

I have 2 SLC500 racks, 1 Automatiotn Direct Controller, and a newly aquired 5550Logix controller. I have 1 SLC wired up in garage to control various things.

We develop Z-wave stuff at work. They're pretty slick; just replace some wall switches and outlets or get the plug-in devices and everything links together via a radio network. You need to replace everything you want automated, though, so it gets kind of expensive. You can look at available stuff here: http://store.homeseer.com/store/Z-Wave-C52.aspx

Oh, and we're just about done with a really slick remote control, so keep an eye out for it. :)

X-10.com stuff is pretty junky as I understand it, but there are some MUCH better options available through Smarthome.com

I have a box full of x-10 controllers and misc. (from the old IBM Home Automation set) bought on Craigslist for dirt cheap.

I use the light timers when we go out of town, and the various light controllers in other apps, but not nearly to the degree that many people do.

The Logitech Harmony 890 already does Z-Wave if he's looking to do something with it now.

I've really been wanting to install a few internet accessible cameras in the home so I can keep an eye on my two cats whenever I'm out of town but it's just to expensive to justify.

I don't know the quality of X-10 stuff, but I remember that their ads annoyed the hell out of me, thus will never buy them.

Leviton's stuff however has worked at my parent's place for a while.

all my xmas lighting is controlled by x-10

i used to get discounts on it when i worked at radio shack years ago

it's funny too, because the technology is like 20 years old but it still impresses people for some reason that i can "wireless" control lighting in my home.
