Just wondering if anyone has any expiriences with AP exams. I've heard from a few people that taking the exams isn't really worth it because colleges are no longer accepting high school classes as par with there. So is it worth it to spend all that time the week before the exam preping and not have it count for anything?

I got college credit for my AP scores, but that was several years ago. If schools don't accept them anymore it seems silly to take them.

Worth it for:
College Credit
Collegs will see these scores when you apply, raising your chances of being accepted. (assuming you score a 4+)

i got out of 16 hours of classes ( 1 full semester ), so $xxx / semester hour * 16 hours = $$$ saved for spending $75/exam

do you know where you're going to college? check the range of scores they accept for credit/grade

No clue where I'm going to school, but a few of my teachers and a few guys who graduated last year told me that even though they scored well on their exams (4's and 5's) schools didn't offer them credit because they felt the courses were sub par.

Back in 97 I received college credit for any exam with a score of 3 or higher. I would check with the colleges you are thinking of applying to (junior) or the college(s) you've been accepted to or will attend (senior) to see what kind of credit they will give you for a given score on a given test.

Personally, it was worth it to me. I was able to AP out of my humanities and social sciences requirement in engineering. I had to take one english class in college, and the rest of my courses were math/science/engineering. A 5 on the AP US History test got me 6 hours of history credit... US history before the civil war (3) and after (3). A 4 on the government test got me out of 3 hours of poly-sci (us gov). A 4 on the english lit exam got me out of my basic honors english course (3 hours).

So, I got out of 12 hours, which is almost a semesters worth of classes. 12 hours would have cost me around $1300 at the time. It was definitely worth it for me.

Depends on the college, but preparing and taking the exams will at least help you in the courses if nothing else. A lot of colleges will still give you credit for good scores, they just might be a little more stringent on what qualifies now. Some of my genius friends (I came from a pretty good HS) started at UM as sophomores and juniors...I think I went in with around a semester of credits.

I took AP Chem, AP Calc, and AP English.

I got out of Freshman English, Chemistry, and Calc 1. Started freshman year with 3 credits under my belt (1 credit / course at my school)
