lil rudeguy is needing a math tutor. He's to the point now where he is frustrated and I am of no help. I can solve the problems but I was taught math in a completely different way than he is learning it. So I'd like to get him a math tutor.

He's in 8th grade. Where should I look? What price should I expect to pay? What do I need to know? What questions do I need to ask?

Thanks guys.

I was hoping for sexy tutor stories.

me too. I had to resist the urge to Google that.

And I'm sure he needs a new approach to learning. His school and I have tried everything but he has issues with math. I figure this is the next logical step.

So...no one has guidance for me?

8th grade is like pre-algebra, regular algebra right? That was a particularly tough time for me in math. I was a grade ahead so I had that fun experience of essentially throwing everything I thought about math, jumbling it all up and looking at it totally differently, a year earlier than most.

I swear there has to be some sort of physiological change to understand algebra.

Teach the youngin' the way you understand. He'll appreciate the different slant. His teacher might not though :/. It took a good 2 months of afternoon sessions with my aunt before I was able to understand myself. Once I got it though - I took off with it.

For 8th grade math? Email a couple math teachers from your district's high school and ask them to offer a $10-15/hr tutor job to some of their better students. Or an ad on Craigslist asking for a younger undergraduate (GRJC?) with an interest in education and teaching. Tutoring is usually a very informal arrangement.

I believe there is. I took a class in educational psychology, and we watched videos of researchers asking kids of different ages questions. You can see their cognitive skills develop as they aged. You can probably find some on youtube if you want to see. I am sure your brain needs to be developed enough to understand the level of abstraction required for algebra. However some people just need an alternative method of learning. Just hire DrPizza and be done with it.

Here in NY, 8th grade is just about the time kids just start learning to read, and do basic division.
