The mechanism that digests lactose can shut down. I guess it's more efficient for your body if you're not eating milk anymore. Actually most people around the world don't drink that much milk, not nearly as much as Americans and maybe Europeans.

Kinda happened to me... I'm 21 now, ice cream used to be fine, but not anymore, just happened about a year ago.

I just use Lactaid (over the counter supplement), works fine for me.

I don't think I've become intolerant, just less tolerant. I'll be 25 next Saturday and I noticed in March that I can't drink as much milk as previously. Granted, my former norm was a beer glass (16oz or so) with supper every night, but even cutting down 4oz to a 12 seems good to go.

Cheese, ice cream, butter, no other diary products seem to bother me.

I too have noticed I'm becoming lactose intolerant, or more specifically flavored milk intolerant while cheese, ice cream and butter are good to eat.

From what I've heard, a person only becomes more intolerant to dairy products as he/she ages. I used to drink 4 glasses of milk a day until my senior year in high school. Ever since then, I haven't been able to handle much lactose without taking some sort of lactaid pill.
