Anyone have any experience with job recruiters?

Im trying to find the best job I can right out of college, and I've been meeting with some recruiters lately. One of the first things they always ask me is "Are you working with any other recruiters?" "Which recruiters (company) are you working with?"

Why are they always asking this question? Is it because of the competition?

As an IT contractor, they are all I ever deal with. They are all lying, filthy, fatcat, thieving bastards not to be trusted. Pretty much. But they will get you a job. If they tell you "This is the most we can offer you" they are lying.

Yes they want to know if you have any other jobs lined up with other recruiters so that they dont double fill you for a job app (apparently that instantly disqualifies you if it happens)

they don't want to send your resume to companies that have already received your resume from other recruiters.

I worked with couple and I would say first try to find a job on your own. The recruiter got me some interviews but the companies were lousy. Most decent companies will have their own in house recruiters.
