.........Specifically the CD-956 56x CD-ROM drive; but opinions on any of their drives would be appreciated. I'm tired of having to wait so long for my 12x8x32 Philips drive to recognize disks -- so I'm hoping that buying a cheap, fast CD drive like the Aopen would give me a more satisfactory stall time.

Thanks in advance,

My AOpen 52X has been working fine...i little noisy but it seems to read everything fine. Haven't tested the speeds or anything but it seems on par with other cheap CDROM drives.

My AOpen 20X CD burner has not had a coaster in five tries. I just got it this weekend and hadn't had time to burn many with it. I web surfed while burning but the 2mb buffer prevented any buffer underruns. Not bad for a $75 CD burner. ;)

The Aopen 56xes are kinda uhh.. flakey :) From what I have seen, 1 in 3 or 4 will be DOA or dead within 3 months. I have had a fairly small sample pool though :)

I'd have to give a thumbs down to AOpen drives myself. They suck in terms of long term use and not only do they become unreliable, but their dodgey DMA function makes the rest of the system unstable as well.

Oddly enough, Acer (which I believe is affiliated with AOpen) has never given me any problems and their stuff has always been top notch. I'm guessing that they're probably situated in a different region of world under better management and quality control.

I have a AOpen 10x/40x DVDROM (I think this is rebadged though) and a AOpen 32x CDROM I've never had problems with either of them, in fact I like them both for transfer times, load times, and they to Audio Extraction pretty well too.

I have had nothing but problems with the two Acer cdrom drives (Both 52X).
I will never buy another one again.

I brought an Aopen 52x (at least I think it was 52x) cdrom for my soon-to-be father-in-law about 4/5 months ago. He's not had a problem with it all all - granted it doesn't really get pounded that much thou.

Its not any noisier than any other CDROM I've come across, cannot comment on the speed of it as I've never benchmarked it.

I think the AOpen Writers are really loud, however the quality of the drives is actually ok after you factor in the price seeing that they are so cheap.

Just had another Acer 52X go bad last night. That's 2 in the past 3 months. Seems like people here have trouble with the Aopen drives as well. I went through 3 Creative drives earlier this year.

WHY ARE CD-ROMS BUILT SO CRAPPY!!???

The ONLY drives I haven't had trouble with have been Asus. (40X and 50X).
