I found myself looking for a job in the midst of the financial crisis in 2008.

An employer offered me 10% less base salary than I was making previously, targeted my bonuses (I'm in 2 plans) at 17%, and gave me a 15K signing bonus. The company had an A+ relo plan and gave me 4 weeks vacation (I had 5). The cost of living is about 10% less than where I was living, I'm saving about 10K/yr educating my kids, and property taxes are much lower.

Of course, I didn't get a 17% bonus but I did get 5% last year.

I have a specialized skill set that the company needed, but I didn't have any other firm offers at the time, so I grabbed the offer as is.

I often wonder if I could have squeezed a little more out of them.

Why look back on the past and think about what you could have done when its already gone and past. You should never take an offer at face value unless there are guaranteed returns, and it looks like there was none.

Do we really need to analyze a situation from two years ago that no longer matters?

I'm not sure about "never", but I figure I could have spilt the difference with them and only taken a 5% hit in base salary. Plus, we're not exactly living in ordinary times.

Probably for the best that you didn't. [thread=2100607]This[/thread] could have been you!

Yeah, I didn't negotiate because I didn't want to negotiate myself out of a job.

I think he made his mistake here: "If you could see to making these modest improvements to your offer, my performance will show you a striking return. I am prepared to commit all the way as part of your team. You have my assurance that you will not regret offering me this position."

It probably wasn't his intent but it suggests that if he doesn't get what he wants he's going to slack. At least that's how I read it.

I probably would ahve been inclined to flush him too.

You should march into your boss's office immediately and demand that you be given a raise in recognition of your 25.25 average posts per day on Anandtech.
