I'm building a new system, and right now I have the Asus Rampage II Gene slotted in as my MB, but the MSI is attractive as it's $70 less (which to my budget means the 2nd monitor can be a 24" instead of a 20" ;)).

1) What's your overall feeling about the board?

2) Does the board support XMP memory?

3) Did the V3.0 BIOS update fix the S3 issues when overclocked?

4) Are there any other problems I should know about?

Thanks.

1) I like the value proposition.

2) Yes, it should. I'm pretty sure all other MSI X58 boards do, so no reason they would leave it out of this one. Maybe you can try emailing/PM/contacting Gary Key, as he has hands-on experience with this board? MSI X58M article has an email link for the author at the top.

3) ?

4) I haven't had as much luck with MSI X58 boards for overclocking and memory compatibility, but Gary had great luck with this board, so maybe experience and BIOS releases are paying off for MSI.

Seriously though, if Micro Center were closer ($199.99 Core i7 920) and I felt like spending the $500+ for a platform upgrade (including memory and cooler) this MSI X58M board is my current #1 pick*** just because I'm always curious about "budget" boards plus I like the micro ATX form factor. Just do a search for my motherboard reviews on this forum for evidence. ;) I put "budget" in quotes because I don't remember the last time I spent $170 for a motherboard, but it is one of the absolute cheapest Core i7 boards available.

***Note that I'm not saying it is the best Core i7 motherboard. I'm just saying that I would pick it because:
1) It is micro ATX.
2) It is the cheapest.
3) It is overclockable.

Problem is that I want a micro ATX board. If I go full size, it'd probably be the Gigabyte UD3 or the new ASRock.

I have one each of the Asus, the DFI, and the MSI matx X58 boards.

From a performance standpoint the MSI is right there with the other boards.

I am doing a rebuild right now I will check if XMP is an option on this board.

Not sure about the S3 issue either.

There have been zero issues with my board thats for sure.

At $170 being able to clock a D0 to 4GHz is pretty good value.

After you get it and have lived with it a week or two, you should post a review/roundup on all four boards.
