Who has an actual computer in their car/truck and if so can you run it off an AC-DC adapter through the dash? I've used my laptop and I have an adapter I bought specifically for that. I think a regular PC would draw more juice.

My friend uses a laptop in his car as well. I'm about to trade off my system for a laptop so I can do the same.

Nothing like watching DVDs or the Winamp Visualization plug-in at night while cruising around :) Major road hazard, btw ;)

I've wanted to do this for a while, but I've been to lazy to collect the parts needed. If you do do it, you should use something along the lines of a Pentium 75, because of lower power consumption, and it only needs an AT power supply.

if so can you run it off an AC-DC adapter through the dash?
You could use an AC-DC adapter but it would be better to build a DC-DC one and bypass the normal power supply completely.

I think a regular PC would draw more juice.
Yes it would, but its nothing a decent alternator couldn't handle.

Hung, yeah you were telling me about it one of those times I stopped by. How do you run the audio out to your deck?

The audio goes straight to the amp which is in the trunk too. I don't have a regular stereo deck in the car. Music comes solely from the PC..

I was planning on building one a few years ago but with MP3-CD decks and stuff like the Neo 35 it's almost pointless now.

the idea sounds pretty cool. Would you have to shut it down everytime you turn off the car and boto back up when you start it again? The constant on and off would be pretty bad on the computer.

My Friend has a Micro-ATX computer in the back of his car with a 7 inch touch sensitive LCD attached to the dash for his MP3 playing. His car rocks :)

What if I wanted to hook up my computer in my trunk and then run my surround sound system I have in my car so that I don't have to override my stock system and I don't screw anything up? Would that work? I don't really know much about cars so I don't know exactly how all this would work, but I would love to have a Mp3 player in my new 2K2 Dodge Stratus :)

Here is one way of doing it with these features:
GPS Navigation with electronic maps, expandable into a full-fledged navigation system (the first navigation software that properly supports Finland will be released this fall. I currently have two cd's of detailed digital maps of Finland but without directions and guidance: only GPS position plotting is supported)
Playback of MP3's. Houses a collection of all my CD's (about 200) on the hard disk
Playback of DVD videos, both from the disk and ripped into the hard drive
Television, currently with DVB (Digital video broadcasting, Digi-TV) tuner
Internet and email using the GSM mobile data
Word, Excel and other essential tools for a mobile office
Touch screen to control the operation of the PC
A LCD screen with good enough quality to watch videos, visibility for all passangers
Voice controls and speech recognition
