Anyone have an EcoSphere?

Does anyone have one of these? I stumbled onto them on Target's website, and looks like it'd be cool to have. Basically just gravel on the bottom, some sort of branch thing, algae, shrimp. Has everything it needs to survive, doesn't require any intervention on the part of the owner.

Some folks have them as old as 9 years, and have had the shrimp reproduce. Looks really cool, but kinda expensive. $60 for a 3.25" one, all the way up to $25,000 for one that is 39".

There any alternatives to the actual EcoSphere (TM)? Something cheaper...I mean it's just gravel and shrimp...

You can make your own EcoSphere. I did it in my junior year in my biology class. All you need is some pond water (with plant matter so that it can create photosynthisis), a clear christmas bulb/ornament thingy (no hook), a square piece of wood with a circle cut out in the center (not all the way through the wood ;)),and some hot glue.

You just use a turkey baster to suck up the water and put the pond water in the ornament. Make sure that you leave a big enough air bubble or everything will die. then you just put hot glue in the hole in the wood and set it on the hole of the ornament and let it set..

Mine did pretty good but it fell and broke :(...but there were lots of life in them...hard to see without magnifying glass.

*Good luck if anyone decides to make one

A Glimpse Into the Future

The EcoSphere is the result of technology developed by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. NASA was researching self-contained communities for space explorers to live in during long-term space flights. Out of this research came the EcoSphere - an ecosystem of animal and plant life in perfect balance.

wow..they really went all-out

I have some liverworts growing in a bottle on a shelf. I need to find a spot where it gets a little more light.
