I am having trouble with this card in my notebook. Windows installs and detects it perfectly. The LAN connection works perfectly. The modem detects and all looks good, but it can't get a dialtone! Yes, I am sure the phone cord is connected and is good and all. I use the same line and end to connect my desktop pc. Even in the Xircom modem utility the test for the line connection fails.

Anyoen else have this problem or know how to resolve it? Do I just have to return the card?

I have that card in my laptop. No problems at all. Where did you download the drivers from. Plus, is it dropping the connections as soon as you connect or it is not even attempting to connect?

It seems like it tries to connect when I try to dial out and then dies. I can tell because my handset for my portable telephone blinks for 10-15 seconds indicating that there is a line in use and then shuts off. In Windows, it will try to dial and then say no dialtone.

What OS? 98? make sure you're not using the Win95 drivers.. it causes them to croak.
They come with 2 CD's one for 95, the other for everything else...

You might try Completely removing all drivers, removing the card, reboot... once it boots into windows with no existing drivers left, shut down, insert card, bootup and load "ALL" drivers at detection.. DO NOT Reboot after it loads the NIC drivers (like it wants you to), click reboot later. Let it install the modem drivers BEFORE you reboot it. That might be your prob...

I configure these things at work all the time. We have about 70 laptops all with those things in them.

My OS in Win ME. I think I did all combinations of installing the drivers, taking out the card, uninstalling the drivers (even in Safe Mode). It's just weird because windows seems to have no problems detecting and so on. Just physically establishing a connection via the phone line.

Also, it defaults every time to use IRQ9 along with the network part and gives me COM5. Is that a problem? I tried moving the COM to 2, 3, and 4, but the IRQ I cannot move at all...even if I disable all of my serial connections.

Whitedog, I will try your way exactly and see if it makes any difference.

I also just now tried your procedure on a different hard drive in the same notebook that has Windows 98. Still the same problem.
