Anyone have a VOLCANO 7+ on their 1.6a?

Volcano 7+ on Thermaltake's site

I'm wondering how quiet it is (in general and compared to the stock HSF) on the LOW setting: 3000rpm@24 dB(A), and whether it will keep the CPU much cooler than the stock Intel fan on this low setting.

I'm trying to build a relatively quiet system, but I would like to have the option to go cooler if I need to.

You'd be better off with the new Alpha PAL8942 ($39 from 2cooltek.com and Plycon.com). The PAL8942 with a 4000rpm fan significantly outperforms the Volcano 7+ in 6000rpm mode; the PAL8942 with a 2000rpm 20dB fan also offers near identical performance to the Volcano 7+ in 6000rpm mode.

Yes, the Volcano 7+ tied the MC462A as you can see right here...but it only did so with a fan measured at a deafening 71dBA. That's louder than loudest Delta38 fan. They measured the medium setting at 64dBA. Although to be fair, 64dB is the same sound figure recorded for the not-so-quiet AVC Sunflower, and it does outperform the Sunflower by a bit at that noise level. At the lowest speed, it does not beat the AVC Sunflower. Alpha claims to beat the AVC Sunflower by 15% with a silent 20dB fan....

I suppose we'll have to wait a few days for reviews of the PAL8942...to see how it compares.

Unfortunately, they're only testing on an Athlon chip...

Is there a review where they directly compare these HSFs with the stock fan...?

Not sure from where these guys come out and claim this fan is pathetic, I bet they've not even touched, owned or used one in their life time. It's so easy to critisize if you haven't got.

Anyway.....this fan isn't loud if you have it on the LOW fan speed setting. At MEDIUM OF MAXIMUM you do hear it.

With that said I have it installed right now and the P4 is running at 2.75GHz. The temps are usually around 44-46C on the LOW fan speed setting.

So take what I said for what it's worth, maybe these people just don't know how to install it and then complain of high tempreture readdings.

The copper isn't even warm to the touch.

GFORCE100, thanks for the input, that sounds like it might be what I'm looking for. Did you ever try the stock fan, and if so, how much difference did you see in temps/sound?

I didn't try the stock fan because this is an engineering sample P4 and it's not a production CPU thus you do not get a fan with it.
