anyone have a Verizon Fios DVR?

finally moving into a fios area and I'm kind of excited about ditching Comcast :thumbsup:

trying to decide if I should switch to the Fios DVR or keep my Tivo... I love my Tivo, but I had an issue a few months ago where the cablecard stopped working and it was such a nightmare to get fixed because no one at Comcast seemed to know anything about Tivo DVR's or cablecards in general.

it has me thinking about switching to the Fios quantum DVR (we've only got 1 TV, but we do need to be able to record 3 or more streams simultaneously)... just curious if anyone had any opinions on the box!

I made a similar switch the last time I moved, but ended up hating the Comcast DVR that I went back to my Tivo after a month.

I had the version before Quantum and it was inferior in so many ways to our DirecTV DVRs. My single biggest complaint is the inability to save a program that has ended. DTV DVR's will save whatever is in the 1.5 hour buffers even if it is not the complete program. FIOS DVR would tell me I couldn't save it as the program had ended even though the entire thing is right there in the buffer to watch.

Agreed. Even a DirecTV DVR from 2006 was better than the DVR Verizon gave me when I signed up for FIOS in 2011. Probably the worst of breed for DVR's. It's still better than watching commercials.

No experience with the latest and greatest Quantum version.

FIOS keep changing the channels around. also the menus are super slow so I stopped using them but the DVR is nice but I stopped using that also when I bought netflix and amazon prime.

ive never seen the channels switching around other than maybe 1 time, and i've been using them for 2.5 years now.

the dvr definitely was super slow, but they updated the interface somewhat recently and it is A LOT faster and smoother than before.

i also want to upgrade to the quantum dvr. my wife records a ton of novelas and they are all around 8-11pm, and there are shows i watch at that time too that i want to record. sometimes they overlap and i have to just record the later airing of the show. then there are sports i like to watch also.

sometimes i'll go in my HT and watch stuff while our 2 shows record though.

but i definitely have contemplated switching to the quantum so that i don't have to do that crap anymore. i'm not sure how much extra a month it is though.

I think it's $22/month, compared to $12/month for the regular 2-stream DVR.

Never had TIVO so can't make a direct comparison, but I like the menu/layout/guide better on FIOS than Time Warner and Dish. (Have had both in the past) They recently updated the guide/menus as someone mentioned above - not sure I care for the color scheme but it feels a little faster.

Really don't have any qualms with it - at the worst, you can order their DVR and cancel that part of the service if you want to use your Tivo box.

I have the verizon multiroom DVR and it sucks donkey balls. The interface is so god damn slow it's aggravating. Button presses take 3-4 seconds to register so you almost always end up going past what you were trying to select.

Yup even after the big interface update they did, everything is still slow. I do not like their DVR but unfortunately that's what we are stuck with.

reading dslreports, it seems like there might be a memory leak bug (lots of people saying that they reboot their Quantum DVR weekly or so).

guessing the best path for me to take would be to get it and see how I like it, and return it back to VZ in favor of my Tivo if it ends up sucking... much as I love my Tivo, that last troubleshooting experience was such a nightmare, I'd like to avoid it if possible.

it isn't slow all the time, but there are times where i'm like wtf is it doing.

but 99% of the time it work fine and works fast.

now if you have a multiroom dvr, and are trying to access the dvr from another set top box ... that is a whole different story. it's slow as balls and delayed all the time.

my wife used to have a tivo but once we got fios we canned the tivo. we actually still have it, it's one of those dvd players with tivo basic free forever. oh, and we also don't have a phone line here so she couldn't get updates lol.

hard to recommend tivo now though that they pretty much announced leaving the hardware business.

Agreed but I've been anticipating their demise for the past 6+ years. Assuming I get a solid 2 years out of it I'll be (somewhat) satisfied, would prefer 4-5 years.

yeah, it works alright. Doesnt record very much, and you cannot replace the hard drive yourself. But it works.

My FiOS boxes are about 4 years old now, but they're the worst set top boxes I've ever used. So damn slow. During game six of the Stanley Cup Finals two years ago I ran upstairs after Chicago tied the game to get my wife to watch, and by the time I got it tuned to the channel the game was over and Chicago had won the cup.

And because it's so slow/unreliable with responding to button presses, I'm always double-pressing buttons and having to start over.

i cancel and renew every 2 year when the contracts are up.. i have the new 6 channel dvr with 1tb.. its good, i have like 80 shows in hd recorded and only 65% full..

it might be your remote... i bought remotes off ebay because my daughter chucks them around.. different model have different speed on the dvr
