Am thinking of putting a TV over my fire place so I can clear up my wall space for my photography gallery.

I am wondering if anyone has a flat panel over the fireplace and whether they like it or not?

Probably be in the 50-60 inch range, plasma or LCD if they are cheaper. It would be in living room.

My existing DLP would then move upstairs into home theater room.

Thoughts comments?

Mine is over the fireplace. No neck strain. This is a gas fireplace. It is really the only good spot to put it and have all seats facing the TV.

Agreed.

I've had this set up for almost 7 years now. No neck strain, etc.

With the way my living room is, it's the only place i could put the tv. If I ever have another house built I will not repeat. Not because of any other reason other than I would like to be able to have more than one choice where the tv goes.

I dont, but my brother does. It "looks" nice, but it hurts my neck after about an hour of watching it.

My neighbor has a TV mounted like this. The TV actually almost fills the entire wall from the fireplace mantle to the ceiling. It looks good, but its uncomfortable to watch.

If you don't use your fireplace, maybe. I'd be worried about the heat though.

Ehh ... I don't personally, but, I would consider it. If neck strain was a concern, I would just recline the seats until optimal comfort is reached.

my parents have their tv inset over their fire place...i dont get any strain with it, as their couch and seats are comfy and the tv is far enough away that its not an issue, but id prefer that it was lower.

I hate looking up at a TV. My Mom has this setup and needless to say I never watch TV at her place.

Over a fireplace is too high. If that's the only place you can put it well then you gotta put it there but you should never have to look up to watch tv.

Our couches are far enough away that it's not a problem. However, I do wish we had a lower place to put it.

I could have but I much prefer the TV to be close to eye level with where I'm sitting...and since I'm not sitting 5' off the floor that pretty much excluded hanging it over the fireplace.

They asked me how I knew
My true Fox was true
I of course replied, something here inside
Can not be denied

They said some day you'll find
All who love are blind
When your heart's on fire, you must realize
Smoke gets in your lies.

My g/f & I have been arguing about this. She doesn't really watch TV so I don't really think her opinion is completely qualified ... our future, ehhhh ... that's another topic.

But as has been commented already; 1) heat from fireplace, 2) too high & neck strain, 3) my personal opinion, the mantle is for a mantle clock a few pictures and/or nutcrackers in December. 4) the TV should be close to your eye height over the floor, or at least in so many words I think that is what was said.

it's not so bad over a gas fireplace

#EDIT

my mom placed a thermometer at the resting place just to make sure it wouldn't get too toasty

my sister had hers on one before she moved because there was no other place in the room to put it + it was out of the way of her kids
