I'm going to ask for a toaster oven for Christmas. I want to make some Quiznos-style sandwiches :) What's a killer toaster oven? I've never had one before and don't know what's good.

i'd think any toaster oven would work. toasting sandwiches doesn't require extreme heat

Never thought about it that way, but you're probably right - I've never seen little trays like that anywhere. The one we got came with a little broiler pan too - only big enough for one person, but great if you want to cook a piece of chicken or something for yourself. Anyway, just watch what you're doing when you use it; apparently they draw quite a bit of power. I know a couple of girls who used to live in the dorms at school and they had one (though they weren't allowed - for fire hazard reasons and another reason which I'll get to in a second). Only trouble was, they had to turn off *everything* else in the room, or they'd blow a bunch of fuses in the dorm building when they used it :p

Yup, the B&D toaster ovens should come with a removable tray. At least the few that I've owned did.

No, but I've been wanting one for a long time. I hate heating up the huge oven to cook something like a couple of pot pies. Such a waste.

on the other hand the big oven is insulated. lil toaster ovens aren't..just thin thin sheet metal and door with large gaps. seems sorta wasteful to me.

whoa :Q that's crazy! I don't want to blow up my house!

I've been using my mom's George Foreman grill a lot lately, and I want to use the toaster oven in conjunction with it. I haven't figured out a good way to toast sub rolls on a frying pan yet :(

Quiznos-style sandwhiches, here I come! :D

Yep. Makes for a painful experience if you don't watch what you're doing...not that I would know anything about that personally:eek:

Yeah, and micowaved pot pies are just...rubbery. I've gotten pretty sick of microwaving corn dogs, pot pies, hot pockets, and frozen chicken cordon blue. That and I'm trying to eat healthier, which means I need to eat more fresh stuff like lettuce on my sandwiches.

I should start another section of my AT Food Page - "The Bachelor's Guide to Making Great Sandwhiches." I've been perfecting my ham sandwhich recently. It still has a ways to go, but it's getting there -

1. Grill up a ham steak on the George Foreman grill for five to ten minutes (they cost like $4 - $6 for 3)
2. "Toast" the sub roll on a frying pan by putting it on medium to high heat and putting butter on the roll.
3. Put honey dijon on the roll when it's done toasting (Mayo and honey mustard also work well).
4. Cut the ham in half and put a half on each roll (it can make two rolls with the size I buy).
5. Put provalone cheese on top of the ham (munster also works well)
6. Put a couple slices of beefsteak tomato on the cheese
7. Put lettuce on the tomato.
8. Close up and enjoy!

I've heard that putting salt on the tomatoes adds flavor. Also, I've been buying Portugeuse rolls lately - the kind of that have the dust (flour?) on top of them. They're pretty good. Also, if you go to a local bakery, you can usually find some pretty good grinder rolls.

One technical issue I have is that the lettuce keeps falling out (I buy the bag of salad lettuce). One option I see is mixing the lettuce with the sauce (say Mayo) and making a kind of paste so that it sticks together better. Or, just eat it carefully. Or else just buy a head of lettuce so that the pieces are longer.

The sandwhich needs more flavor, but that might just be because I've had a crappy diet my whole life and my tastebuds are shot and need to get back to normal (too much sugar, heh). I'd like to use the toaster oven to melt the cheese over the ham and tomato, Quiznos-style.

Hmm.... true. The element in an oven doesen't stay on the whole time that the oven is on.... although I doubt a toaster oven would either. Surely there must be more expensive models that are insulated?

Interesting point though. I need to get a toaster oven and a couple of those Kill-A-Watts(that measure power usage) and see which one is better.

I'm pretty sure the toaster oven would use less, though.. even if it wasn't as much as I thought/hoped. I mean, you have to turn the oven on for 5 minutes just to preheat it. That's a lot of steel you have to heat up.

how long does a toaster oven take to heat up?

They heat up pretty quick. They don't have to heat up as much area as a full size oven. Mine is ready to go in about a minute, top.

If you're in a reasonably modern house, I wouldn't worry about it. That particular dorm building is fairly old; I'm surprised that stuff like that doesn't happen more often. Just don't run it off a powerstrip with a bunch of other stuff attached, or something like that :)

nice price, not so nice reviews

omg! it's really pwning people because everyone hates it :) here's a good quote--

"The toast button doesn't work or only works occasionally. I would be better off starting a fire outside and trying to get toast."

rofl, that's great. Ever seen the new Flipper movie? The uncle makes toast with a mini blowtorch.

I may get this one. Double the price, but I'm willing to invest in quality (especially if it's Santa who has to invest ;))

yea oven elements turn on and off. the cycles are probably slower in an insulated oven. but yea the toaster oven probably heats up much faster since its small. and well its small to quickly toast small quick food so it makes sense. i guess i'd just avoid using it for longer cooking like frozen pot pies or whatever.

I'm still using my toastmaster ultravection that I bought off a hot deal quite some time ago. It makes stuff crisp quickly without any hot spots.
