Anyone have a tablet PC?

I'm look at them, as I will probably be buying one in the next few months. Does anyone have one and would you care to share your experiences?

Specifically, I guess, how is the text recognition? Does it make a lot of errors or is it accurate in making your writing into text? Do you find yourself leaving notes as images or converting them to editable text generally?

This will be mostly for taking minutes/notes so I figure even though most tablets are more expensive and less powerful than laptops, it will be worth it. I'm still undecided as to whether I want a convertible kind like the Toshiba that has a built-in keyboard and clamshell design, or whether a simple tablet is best.

Any comments?
Thanks 🙂

search "tablet" here and in general hardware, I recall a couple of recent threads. Searching archived threads should find a few more. Sadly, no one makes the $600 6"x9" tablet I'd want to buy.

text recognition is decent initially but it doesn't learn, i understand that MS is working on changing that.

I have the Toshiba, it has the P3 1 ghz chip, i wish i had waited for the centrino because of the increase in battery life.

whether you buy a convertible or a simple tablet will depend on how often you will use it as a notebook. i personally use it as a notebook only about 80% of the time.

I was thinking about a tablet, but I'm going to hold out and see what the OQO is like.
I caught wind of it in Wired a few years back and they've been saying "later this year" since then, I had pretty much assumed it was vapor but apparently they had them at the past CES. They say it'll be fall 2004 when they release them, I guess we'll see though.

one of the older toshiba's, 3505.

and yes, i love it. i always thought that larger desktop replacement type laptops were better. now i know better. this thing is awesome. i love the size, portability.

I have a Compaq Transmeta Crusoe 1GHz 512mb 30 or 40gb drive wireless lan and geforce 2 go graphics card tablet pc. I think I could have listed the specs nicely, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I think the general idea of it is good, but it can still improve. It could improve on text recognition, but even at that it is still amazing, I guess it'll teach you to write clearly. We got a VERY good deal on it so this is not something I spent $2k on at the time and am biased about, no, I'll just tell you clearly what I think of it.

If it's just for taking notes, the tablet will be fine. I will reccomend either getting a keyboard or one with a keyboard in it. If I had $2000 for only a portable computer, it wouldn't be for a tablet pc, it would be for a nicer laptop. Have you thought about very light and long battery laptops?

The tablet PC is SLOW. The cpu I think is a big factor because it's a transmeta crusoe 1GHz, these things aren't designed for speed at all, next, the hard drive is slow. I don't really know what to say because these systems are aimed at light usage and long power lasting, but internet explorer takes quite some time to load. Again, I think this is due to the slow cpu.

As for battery life, that's great, under very light usage, like just taking notes, it's great. For portability this thing is awesome. For ultimate portability get an Aircard so you can get internet access for anywhere you wish.

Umm... what else to tell.... hrmmm... the screen is fine imo and I have no complains with the pen.

Oh yeah, you WILL need a keyboard, don't expect to be using the pen all day, for the most part it will work, but it will probably have trouble recognizing some letters you will find yourself using an on screen keyboard. If getting a thin and light laptop is possible, I reccomend that.

Your statement is misleading and incorrect, Your tablet PC is slow, my Tablet PC with the 1 ghz P3 is much better. the newer TabletPC's with Centrino CPU's are much better.
