My gf used to have a corn snake. It was kind of a pain to take care of, but it got out of its tank and disappeared one night. Problem solved. If you really want a reptile get a bearded dragon or a veiled chameleon. They're much cooler IMO. Or better yet, get a dog. Even the cool reptiles are kind of boring.

I had snakes for many years ranging from Royal Pythons, Red Tailed Boas and Rosy Boas to Northern Pine snakes, Rat snakes and King snakes.

Don't have any now though. Got tired of having to raise mice and rats to feed the snakes, that plus some were starting to eat rabbits. And I sure as hell wasn't going to to listen to bunnies screwing in the back room every night.;)

My friend has a rosy boa which was cool but I had a leopard gecko which was awesome. He was about 3 inches when we got him and he grew to about 7 inches. He was really friendly and would just chill on your chest while watching TV. He also liked to be petted. The only problem was occasionally we would get noisy crickets from the store and those he didn't eat right away would be soon killed by the hand of death.

This place will sell you a nice green mamba, spitting cobra, or gaboon viper!

I lived with several snakes and a large monitor lizard in college (my roommate's), and they vary quite a bit in their temperment. Something like a ball python is ideal IMO, because they have a sedate, tranquil disposition, and don't bite unless they are handled very roughly. On the opposite end of the spectrum is something like a black racer - they are pretty snakes but quite aggressive and mean-tempered.

As a sidebar, I remain a little amazed that it's perfectly legal to buy and own venomous snakes, like the ones at the store I linked - snakes are quite resourceful at escaping their enclosures, and there are plenty of moronic snake owners out there. OTOH, the number of people who suffer serious or fatal bites from pet snakes is nominal, so I guess it's not a grave risk.

We have two beardies (and a host of other pets) and they are EXCELLENT first reptiles.

Head over to the Pogona board on yahoo (don't have a URL) - it is probably the best resource on the net for Beardies and other lizards...

Reptiles belong in the wild, not in a cage.

There, I've said it.

A dog on the other hand...................................

Them why the fvuck did you have it? if you can't keep it until it reaches full size then do not bother.. Christ i hate people like you. Whenever i go to a local reptile swap people are buying Burmese, reticulated pythons or anaconda's. But they do NO FVUCKING reasearch on them. They grow to be a very large snake. That will have to eat either rabbits or such.

/end rant.

anyway. I have 2 Ball pythons (ghost named monty and a goldish color one Named Mr.P) nad a red tail python but it died (got it from a friend. NOt sure how old it was). and varies rat/corn/gardner snakes.

My wife has a Bearded dragon but its getting old.

If you are planning on getting a snake please please do some research. Ball pythons are one of the best snakes to have. They are soo docile. I would have mine around my shoulders on holloween and scare people when they came over heh.

When i buy them i wither go to a local reptile swap in IL or order from N.E.R.D and Order food from Mice on Ice. its to much of a hassle raising rats/mice.

Sundog and I have the same level of experience....he posted basically what I would've. :)

I have none now...I had to give my babies away when I left Texas. :( Couldn't take them on the road with me.

I had:

10-foot, 40 pound Columbian Redtail Boa
5-foot, 3 pound Brazillian Rainbow Boa
4-foot, 2 pound (skinny little guy, and my favorite :)) Royal Python, aka "Ball" Python

The Ball was my first...he was six years old when I gave him away. The big Boa was five and the BRB 4. I miss them a lot.

heh My new house has a huge basement. I'm going to build a snake habitat for them. IF i can build something i think is safe enough I might get another red tail (my last farmhouse i had a great cage in my computer room. But i tore it down after the snake died).

My wife said i can get something that big BUT it has to be NO way it can get out. heh

But i really like Ball pythons. They are "nice" snakes.
