This is actually my first experience with macros of any kind, so please forgive me.

Basically, I want to assign the 2 sides buttons (buttons 4 and 5) on the Death Adder to correspond with the hotkeys "5" and "6", which is where I placed my healing and summoning spell, respectively. I want to access these hotkeys on my mouse instead of reaching over with my fingers.

So on the Death Adder config. screen, I set Button 4 to "Advanced Function," which brings up the macro screen. I then press "Single Key" & punch in the number 5 to set it. I press apply & exit. I made sure the Death Adder was in the system tray, then fired up Oblivion. However, when i press the side mouse button during the game, nothing happens. The spells don't switch.

I'm probably just being a newb & am completely misunderstanding the concept of a macro.

Next to "Single Key," there is a "Macro" button also. I tried that & when I press the number 5, it inputs it like this: (down arrow)5(up arrow)5

Not sure what the difference is to just "5" when i input it via "Single Key"

Any help is appreciated.

I have a death adder but dont use the macros.
And Oblivion is really a console game they were generous enough to port to PC.

They had no intention of letting you effectively use the superior computer controls.

And look under Oblivion -> User interfaces and Utilities.
I bet at least one other person thinks like you and wants to use a better control system for the game.

There are thousands of weapons and spells in the game and they picked a very poor system to manage your equipment.

What I'd really like to see is catergories, sort of like they did in Red Faction and Half-life, only let you pick which items go in which catergories.
I'd have all my melees in "1", ranged under "2", and then split up my spells under "3" through "4". Self-healing curing, ranged healing and curing and enchancement, self-enhancement, ranged attack, touch attack, and so on.
Or maybe split up the attack spells by element. If fire doesnt work well you should be immediately able to go ice.

This one may help you. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2897

This looks like something I want: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2466
Another one for me: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2461

I think this is good for both of us: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6962

This was designed for clothing sets but also works for spells: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14794
This is something I like, but it requires other mods to be present: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14367
