Im thinknign about moving from a PIII 733 to the P4 1.5..... is there a big noticable difference? and should I get it? I mean is it worth the $? Everything is about $400, the mobo (Intel(r) Desktop Boards - D850GB), and the CPU w/ fan, and the Samsung Rambus 256MB PC800 Ram, and the case.....

It depends if you spend most of your time playing solitaire and surfing the net or most of your time playing games at max res and doing other crazy stuff.

I have a 1.7@2.07 had a 1.5 and yes it was worth the upgrade from my 933 but you need to ask yourself if its worth the money to you.

And if you do get it, get the Asus P4T Motherboard.

I value compatability and low heat over price so I chose the P4 over AMD. But thats a personal opinion.

The P4 is a gamer's delight. That was it excels in. If I were you7 however, I would wait until november when the new socket chipset for the P4 comes out because it will make upgrades in the future easier.

I went from AMD 1.33/1.4 systems back to Intel with the P4, night and day difference on stability in most cases, it's nice to use a Intel chipset again. :) I would highly suggest the Abit TH7II-R board with a s478 cpu at this time. If you do not overclock then the Intel D850MD s478 is a great board or you could wait for the MSI/Asus s478 i850 boards in the next couple of weeks. I would not go the i845 path, too much performance penalty using sdram with this cpu. Hopefully the VIA/ALI/SIS ddr solutions will be out soon.

Tex, the new chipsets ARE out. Try the Abit TH7II (RAID or no RAID) or the Asus P4B. Both are Socket 478 and will take the new Northwood procs when they come out.

I have a P4 1.5, and upgraded from a P3 800e that ran 1064, The 1.5 is alot faster, and as the others have stated, go with the p4t board, mine does 1949 with that board, as to waiting for the northwood, and buying the board with the 478 compatibility, The cost is way to high now, better IMHO to buy now for cheap, and upgrade later when the prices come down, and the bugs are worked out. I am in the process of buying a 1.8 right now, but in reality the 1.5 is more than enuff for anything out there right now.

Bud, the Asus has the Intel chip on it.

The reason you had so many problems in the past was because VIA was the chipset maker.

Many times Asus Intel based boards are actually MORE stable than Intel's own boards

Ok as long as you are sure bud.

BTW for those thinking about the 478 socket, its out but only for sdram so far.

The 478 socket + rdram mothboard is called the p4t-e and its not out yet
