it seems like a great small car. the fuel economy is really good and its comes with a 6-spd standard.

i really want one of them.

We(my wife) almost bought the 1st one in our town, it appears to be utilitarian enough but it's ugly as sin.

I kind of like the HHR even though it's ugly but kewl at the same time.

We looked at many compact cars when we bought in July. The only diff between the Versa and Sentra is the price and the looks. The Versa is not really any more fuel efficient than the Sentra is. The Versa is just a bit less attractive and cheaper.

After looking at a LOT of cars we ended up buying a Civic for about $2,000 more.

It's definately a compact car, sentra platform built in Mexico. I drove one looking for something better on gas than my Altima, its not horrible, and if you want a compact take it out for a spin. Compare it to the Yaris and Scoin, and the smaller Civic imo

I've driven a couple of rental Versas--IMO, you're better off buying a used 'better' car for the same $. I vaguely recall that the Versa felt cheap and looked bad. But if you insist on buying new, it's hard to beat the Civic and Mazda3. Did you look at the new Saturn Astra?

In the Sub compact class There's the Aveo, Fit, Versa Yaris, and Kia Rio
comparing to Civics and Sentra's is not allowed cause thats a dif class of vehicle.
I have a Versa I like how it looks, like a baby Murano, but style is subjective.

The Yaris and Aveo are tied as a distant 3rd in this class, the only thing the Yaris has going is FE.
The Rio is Second
The Fit and Versa are comparable with the Fit a better city driver and on gas, and the Versa has better cabin room for passengers and a more polished HW ride.
The bigger cabin 'backseat is huge' and HW driving is why I chose the Versa over the Fit.

If the astra is the same astra Holden flogs here, it's hardly sub compact ;)

The new Focus seemed to get some good reviews here, if you want a car that big...

The Nissan Versa sucks. The rear seats don't fold down flat with the trunk, so you get less cargo volume. The fuel economy is not that great either. According to the January 2008 edition of Popular Mechanics where they did a head-to-head comparison with the Honda Fit, the Fit got an average of 32.9MPG, and the Versa only got an average of 19.7MPG. I went car shopping with a friend several month ago. The friend ended up going with the Honda Fit.

Go to the Nissan Versa Forums, its gas mileage is not 19 mpg, mostly around 30 for people there, I typically get about 32 but is mostly 80/20 HW/City split.
I choose people over cargo in my Versa, two kids in the back seat and it has better safety ratings than the Fit with side curtain standard for backseat occupants.

How in the world did they manage 19MPG from a Versa? That's crazy, or they messed up the testing calculations.

No way in hell the versa only got 19mpg. The driver would have had to lock the trans into first gear on the highway and I STILL don't believe 19mpg.

I can't, trying as hard as I can get my altima, under 25mpg under any conditions.

From Edmunds (review of 2008 Versa):

Pros: Roomy interior with an adult-friendly backseat, comfortable ride, available with many useful convenience features.

Cons: Engine gets noisy at high rpm, less than athletic handling and braking capabilities, inconsistent build quality.

The 1.8S Versa averages 24/32 MPG while the 2.0 Sentra averages 25/33 MPG. I looked at the Versa and the car makes sense ONLY if you cannot afford a larger, slightly more expensive car. The Sentra (in some cases) gets better mileage than the Versa ... at only a slightly higher cost.

This segment (sub-compact/compact) of the market is flooded with great choices for potential buyers. I am a big fan of Nissan as I have bought two (2) new Frontiers in the last 12 years BUT the only plus the Versa has over others in this segment is the slightly lower cost of ownership, up front. On other fronts (including it's questionable looks) the car is only average, at best.

From the new EPA ratings the Sentra does NOT get better gas mileage

Versa
City 27
Hwy 33

Sentra
City 25
Hwy 33

The 2008 Nissan Versa is praised for interior comfort and upscale design, but falls short of competitors in driving performance and fuel economy. With so many compact and subcompact cars with similar capabilities and features, the Boston Globe speaks for many, saying it's "on the fence" about the Versa's ability to compete between the "sassy" Fit and the "bookish" Yaris.

BusinessWeek warns, "If you're a driving enthusiast, this is not the car for you." However, if you're interested in comfort and safety features, Motor Trend says the Versa is "the biggest bargain of them all in more ways than one."
A variety of optional features could push the price tag up, but nevertheless, experts generally agree that the Versa is a good deal. IntelliChoice gave the 2007 Nissan Versa a rating of "Better Than Average" based on its total cost of ownership compared to other vehicles in its class.

My wife and I have had our Nissan Versa for over a year. We typically get about 32-33 mpg on the highway, and have put about 22,000 miles on it with out a problem. It does not have as much rear cargo room as others in its class, but the rear passenger room is far superior. We looked at the fit and yaris when shopping, but the price/value with the Versa was better.

I don't get some of the milages on the compacts/subcompacts. 32MPG? Some 3.5L V6's pull 30-31 in a car that weighs 500+ pounds more.

The intown is certainly better(weight comes more into play here), but the highway is pretty crappy.

If all you do is drive in town I guess it makes more sense, but if you do a large amount of highway I guess I'd give up a MPG or two for something that is bigger, safer, and quicker.

and too think my 07 Coupe Civic gets 35 on average :) (EPA thinks 26 city 34 highway - and I have never gotten below 35 on my Civic)

The new mileage estimations are on the low side for many higher average miles per gallon cars.
