Anyone have a mac mini?

Just trying to get some not-too-biased opinions on this. I have a 27" LCD TV with DVI inputs and a shelf right below it. A mac mini would be a sweet accessory - but only if it will play DVDs just as well as any other DVD player out there.

Thoughts? What about a remote?

It has a combo DVD drive...and a Radeon 9200 card with hardware assist DVD decoding...I would think that it would do the trick just fine as long as that was ALL it did while watching movies.

I have an LCD TV hanging on the wall and a 9" deep shelf a foot below it. I found *one* model of DVD player that would fit, a JVC for $75. I'm not especially fond of the DVD player, and the mac would be an interesting "conversation piece." (*)

That's a hella expensive DVD player unless you plan on using it as a HTPC or something.

It's not too bad compared to other DVI upconverting DVD players. I'm also curious about the mini in general and had tossed around the idea of buying one just to see what it's like - but if I could reliably use it as a dvd player (without having to keep a mouse lying around for the remote) then it would be a compelling "practical" use as well.

Not to derail the thread, but wouldn't an easily modded Xbox be a better fit for your needs?

Ive used an Xbox for this sort of thing, and it works fine. 😀

I have also been looking into getting a Mini Mac and just using my current PC as some sort of file server, but i havnt really seen the point apart from the size ect..

1. ummm...if you think a peice of hardware will get you laid, you are wrong. Well, there is one peice of hardware that will get you laid, but you can't go to a computer store to buy it.

2. "conversation piece"?

No. No it won't.

Any girl who wants ANY discussions about your macintosh DVD player is either your mom, wondering why you spent $500 on a DVD player or is ugly as sin.

I have a Mac Mini.. And yeah it works good, but I dont know how you are going to control it with a remote.. I would also vote for the xbox route.

ATi remotes may work. ATi cards can be used with Mac's, so the remote controls might work too, no idea if they would tho.

Well the video is integrated on the mini, so you cant replace the card.. And there is no IR port on it.. I guess you could go USB, but then that really defeats the "look"

Some chick is going to bang you just because you have a Mac Mini? LOL, that would be a first.

Lol, ok, ok, I didn't think people would take my tongue-in-cheek comment quite so literally.

At the same time, you'd be a fool if you honestly don't think that it makes a difference - a stylish flatscreen TV and DVD player in your bedroom could get you just as far as a BMW. 🙂

However I'm legitimately interested in the technical aspects. The Mac Mini looked like an obious choice for an htpc/dvd unit - I'm frankly surprised there is no IR support from apple yet?

I have a stray DVI input - plus in all honesty, the xbox is too big, heavy, and just isn't something I'd want to "display" in my bedroom.

The mac mini, if nothing else, does look pretty good sitting on a shelf.

Somehow I don't think some chick is thinking, "You know, I wasn't going to bang him, but then I saw that flatscreen and DVD player! Ooooh, I'm getting the vapors!!!!!!!!"
