Anyone have a link to an explanation of the Dawn of Man scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey

I have the making of 2001 book but there really isn't a detailed explanation of the monolith scene. Anyone have a link or care to explain it? For example, what are the cognitive meaning of the monolith/obelisk?

I'm not sure I'm following you, but the way I recall it having not read the book in some years, the Monolith teaches someone a new skill when he touches it, which catalyzes development of civilization.
