And what makes you think that just because it was on TV that it has no copyrights on it?

WTH!!?!? I think you should just leave, then. I love it when people get mad at others for their own ignorance. We were correcting you. If you can't handle it, maybe you should live under a rock.

No, I think he has a valid point - when someone comes asking for something like this, all the self-reighteous hoo-hows comes out of the woodwork to chastize, yet WE ALL KNOW that they have pirated software on their computer, or at least have some music lying around somewhere that they didn't buy.

Who said he was a bad person for asking? From the responses I read, people mainly were correcting him on thinking it was in public domain. Are we reading the same thread? And from his original post, you can tell that he knows it's not right to post on this forum asking for illegal stuff.

Arstechnica
Ars OpenForums

Ars is much more laid back, no language filters, you can post images inside threads, and you dont get your balls busted for asking an easy question or something like this... plus I think it is filled with more computer and IT professionals while Anandtech has a larger ratio of newbs. Anandtech is more of a hardware forum, and I ask hardware-related questions here, but on Ars I always get Linux, NT, networking questions answered and quicker too, and with nicer replies!

but I've been on Anandtech forever so I aint leaving, you'll have to put up with me - sorry.

One reason why I like AT is because I don't have to d/l other peoples images, etc.in their sigs. To me annoying and doesn't keep it clean.

Don't you have to subscribe to even look at Off Topic forum over at Ars?

yes, but if I want off-topic I go to Anandtech, if I want fast, friendly and professional answers to technical and semi-technical operating system or networking questions, you cant beat Ars

I dunno if it's just me, but if someone were to either a.) record the movie on tape, and then copied it onto the computer and encoded in DIVX, or b.) recorded the movie thru a TV card or something, and converted that to divx, wouldn't that be legal?

I think so - for personal use only.

Yes. The questionable part comes in when you send that file to someone else. We all know that copying for personal use is perfectly legal and the recording industry even collects a percentage on the price of recordable media for this purpose. Even in the days of videotaping or dubbing cassettes there was an acknowledged and accepted gray area when you would give the tape to a friend. But when you can transfer from computer to computer with no consumable costs involved then the gray area shifts considerably.

I'm not making a moral judgement and I'm not a lawyer.
