If so how did it happen.
I bought a 64 meg GF2 card from one of the guys in the For Sale forum here who regularly sells lots of them. I installed it and it was fine.
It was more than fine, it was GREAT.
I installed my new CPU, and while doing so I needed to pull the card out and move things around. I put the card back in, of course powering down in between. I am so paranoid about power and cards in fact that I always unplug the power cord from the back of the PC between these oerations and I always keep myself firmly grounded to metal to prevent static. I have been a working electronics tech since 1978, so these precautions are second nature to me.
About the third time of plugging the card back in it was 'dead'. All it will do is display vertical color stripes ov varying intensity and width. The colors kind of go along with what is going on with the machine, for instance I can tell when I get it to go into CMOS setup because the colors turn blue and yellow. THe machine seems to run fine because I can hit DEL right after the single beep and get into CMOS and then hit ESC and ENTER and it reboots. If I let it boot all the way I get greyish toned stripes, which would be the windows logon screen. I let all disk activity stop and put in my password and it seems to log on properly. Then I can hit CTRL-ESC up one ENTER ENTER and the system reboots just like it should.
So the only thing is that it scrambles the video. It's like it is doing the wrong frequency or has a bad cable to the monitor. Only I have tried it on two other systems with the exact same results.
I have only had the card for about 16 days now. It's OEM and they said I get a 30 day warranty. I contacted them and they said they will have to have someone look and determine if it was "User caused". I guess that means make sure I didn't hit it with a hammer or urinate on it. They won't reply to questions I ask about what constitutes user caused failure and what would make it replaceable under warranty.
So, I am interested to hear if anyone else has had these kinds of experiences and what advice anyone would offer. Thanks
