If you shoot "normal" JPEG, double that number; 1200 shots on a single 2GB card. "Basic" JPEG is over 2000 shots on a single 2GB card.
And if you shoot RAW, it's somewhere around 350 shots on a single 2GB card.
With SD cards dirt cheap, and their size being equal to that of a postage stamp, it isn't much of a hassle to carry an extra 2GB card with you.
Although personally, I would never shoot more than 300 photos without backing them up to my PC (unless I had no access to a PC, of course).
