I have a Canon PowerShot A85 digital camera and any pictures I take are way out of focus.

I think it may be due to the batteries I'm using. Lately they haven't been holding a charge for very long. I have Merkury 2500 mAh NiMH rechargeable batteries. Anyone else have this problem of bad focusing? Which type of batteries do you recommend?

Make sure the setting for the pretty flower is OFF.

Believe it or not, the girls in last year's senior class at my HS used to leave the macro setting on just because of the "pretty flower". One of the guys was complaining to me that the camera was taking really sh!tty pictures and when he found out what was going, well, the girls never heard the end of it :p

Haha, no I know about the macro shot setting, it's been off while taking any pictures.

Mine seems to be doing that now and then also. Not really as bad as these, but enough that it's noticeable. Seems like it only happens when there is low light. I also know when it's going to happen because when I hold the button down half way before I take the shot usually some small green boxes will show up to show where the focus of the shot will be, when this problem happens those boxes don't show up.

Yeah it looks like you're trying to take pictures in the dark. The focusing mechanism needs light to work properly.
Your camera should still be able to use infinity focus even with the macro setting on. I leave my K750 on macro mode, and I've never had any trouble with infinity focus.

OK I'll check the AF assist lamp mchammer.

Yesterday I went out with my friends on a road trip to a local shoreline, during the day. There was plenty of sun out and I used my friend's batteries (non-rechargeable I believe); the first picture I took was perfect. Subsequent ones kept getting blurry so I just left my camera in the car for the rest of the day. So while I understand about the low light conditions, it was a sunny day out and it just would not focus... like ivol07 said those green boxes didn't come up.

I'm going to recharge these batteries I have and make sure the AF assist lamp is set to on.

EDIT: Well I tried the batteries and there's enough juice in them to power the camera. I looked through the menu and while the AF assist beam was on, the AiAF was not. I turned that on and it looks to be working. Jeez... all this and it was some stupid setting that I had no idea was off in the first place.
