7920 is a stupid cpu... really...
Everyone is waiting for the 2 bigger sisters which are suposed to come out.
But cost / usefulness the 7920 isnt much better then a 7900, unless you ABSOLUTELY need those 2 extra cores.

You could say the same about any other CPU from the line-up. Cost / usefulness the 7980xe isnt much better then a 7960, unless you ABSOLUTELY need those 2 extra cores. There you go and tell me its not true.
Yep, I predict the middle 12, 14, 16 core parts won't be popular. Either people will go with the 10 core part or the big daddy 18 core part.

Proof by induction
If we assume as true that a CPU with K+2 cores is indistinguishable from a CPU with K cores, then:
(K+1) + 2 = (K+1)
K+3 = K+1
K+2 = K.
By this logic, any CPU with two additional cores than another CPU is indistinguishable from a CPU without those two additional cores.
Single core CPUs FTW!!!
You can avoid that last bit about CPU cores if you assume K >= 10, but at that point, one is just doing mental gymnastics
But in all seriousness, get a 10 core or get one of the 14+ core parts...the 12 core one is just a weirdo.
You cant really reduce this by some mathematical formula. I would prefer 7940x or 7960x over 7920x too, but saying its not really better than 7900x is just silly no offense
And while i guess you would certainly see a difference between 1-core and 3-core CPU, 10/12 and 16/18 are pretty similar ratios and if anything, you would see slightly bigger difference between 12 and 10, than between 18 and 16 (assuming same clocks).

Almost, but not quite. We have failed to demonstrate a base case, so we can't really make use of this attempt at proof.
Perhaps we should attempt proof by contradiction?
Assume 12 cores are indistinguishable from 10 cores. This implies that $1199 = $999, which implies that 199 = 0. This is a contradiction, therefore our initial assumption must be flawed.

2 more weeks for the big boys to show up! I cant wait. Still undecided on the motherboard. Taichi would be my choice, as it seems to get nothing but praise, but for whatever reason it has only single 8-pin - despite apparently having great power cascade and even more or less acceptable VRM heatsink. Bottom line, although i am looking only at slight overclock, i fear in case of 14-core chip single 8-pin might not be enough even then....
So it seems ultimately i will have to decide between the triplet of Asus boards (Strix, Prime-A or TUF1) or MSI Pro Carbon AC.
There always needs to be some "but" i guess.

Correct, but are we simply accepting that the base case is true? Is there a reason we are considering 7900X vs. 7920X rather than 7800X/7820X? Or maybe 7740X/7800X?
If we really push it, we may be able to prove 28 cores = 0 cores by induction!
