i'm coming from the 16 MB cache 5400 RPM toshiba.
will i notice the difference going to a 7200 RPM 8 MB cache?

also what about battery life?
logically, it should drain more power since the rotation is faster, but i hear they're more efficient so it evens out.

Yes....I would think so. Is it really a 16 mb cache on your old drive? That seems high...but I guess I don't really follow laptop hardware.

Yes.

I have a 5k80 and a 7k60. Same machine except for the drive. There's a difference. The 5k80 is also la bit louder. I blame Newegg's terrible packing for that.

And the HGST drives have benched higher in every review I've seen over the Toshiba parts. Even w/ half the cache.

yup, 16 mb cache but benchmarks showed no benefit over 8 mb cache drives.

The power draw difference is negligible. I doubt you'll consistently notice any difference in battery life. Seriously just look at the specs.

That's likely related to WinBlows or drivers.

I have a HGST 7200 rpm 60GB HD in my Voodoo M:355 laptop.
It makes a huge difference. I also tried to use my IBM 40GNX 5400rpm 8mb cache 40Gb HD in this notebook and it did not feel as responsive.
The 40GNX was benchmarked as one of the fastest 5400 rpm HDs, beating out the 16mb cache toshibas too.

I think if I were to get a 5400 rpm notebook HD, I go for the seagate momemntus series w/8mb cache or just save up for a 7200 rpm 60Gb hd. it really makes using your notebook more enjoyable.
