anyone has experience with a tailor?

Well, the suit is okay, the pants is the problem. I paid only attention to the suit fitting and ignore the dress pants completely.

[edit] The suit and pants were bought in a store, not custom made from a tailor.[/edit]

It turned out to be too wide and long.

Now, I know and imagine you can make it shorter by trimming and tucking in the excessive part and sew it.

but how about the "wide" part? can it be done? if so, ROUGHLY, how much?

didn't they measure your waist and all those things so how could they get it wrong?

now prepare to pay extra for the "touch-ups"

Go back to where you got it. If they tailored it wrong, they'll probably fix it no charge. If they don't, throw a fit and you'll get it fixed no charge.

They should have measured you and tailored it from where you bought it.
They can take the coat in a good amount.

couldn't you exchange them for a size or two smaller?

sorry for didn't explain one crucial part (that I thought wasn't crucial), I bought it at a store, not from a custom-made tailor... there's only one set left, so there is no other pants to exchange/swap.

anyhow, shouldn't ppl expect their suit to be tailored to some degree since there is no way for it to be perfect fit from the manufacturer?

Yes. Any suit you buy should be tailored some from who you buy it from. Unless you bought it at kmart.

If they won't do basic tailoring, don't buy from them.

Which is why you buy your good suits from a tailor in the first place. Bite the bullet and pay a good tailor to fix the slacks if possible or make a suggestion if not. Tailors don't just sew, they understand fabric, cut and, how it hangs on your frame. A good tailor can save you money by helping you avoid expensive mistakes. Once you find a good tailor, stick with him.

I guess "you get what you pay" is best to answer my predicament.

well, I thought for my first suit I will go for a cheaper one until I understand (and appreciate) what to look for in a more expensive one. I got it for $150. If it means anything, the brand is Jones New York.

As for the questions about adjusting the pants above, yes, the "wide" problem can be fixed - to a lesser degree if you (god forbid) got pleated pants. You need to take the suit to a real tailor versus the shop you purchased it where the hackjob they have adjusting suits is lucky if they can adjust length and maybe the waistband. It's totally unacceptable to purchase a suit and have them overlook the pants entirely in the fitting...

Once you've own and worn real tailored clothing there's no going back... it blows any off the rack suit completely away and can be surprisingly affordable if you shop around (Hong Kong is probably the best/most affordable place to get one done if you are ever there on business). You can customize every detail from fabric to buttons to lapel style and it will fit the unique nuances of your body. Off the rack suits are mass produced to fit the broadest possible audience of wearers with some basic adjustment points to allow a retailer to offer a "custom fit." Most men shop by label or color/style rather than fit so this suits the mass market just fine. Once you've compared a "fitted" mall suit to one that's been tailored for you from scratch the difference is night and day. A good tailored suit can last a lifetime if properly cared for where a cheap $300-400 suit will last a few years before needing to be replaced so the investment is a good one long term.

me = originally from HK 🙂 now, I am LA though.
I do go back there once in a while, but I don't think I will stay long enough for a suit to be made (7-9 days is not eough right?). I wonder can I find a willing tailor here in the US to give me the measurements and then I send the data back to an HK tailor. 🙂

Actually I was in Hong Kong for 7 days and had 5 shirts plus a suit made with time to spare - depends on how busy they are though. Sam the Tailor on Nathan Lane is always reliable, I also found "Royal Hong Kong Fashions" did a great job on a couple of shirts I had made.
