Anyone had their tonsils removed? Was it worth it?

Just wondering if I should have it done...my tonsils are very very inflammed and have been for years but they don't hurt.

Thanks.

supposedly inflammed tonsils make you more susceptible to other infections.

How old are you?

If you are older than say 13, it is a very painful operation. I had mine out at 17. I was told that I had swollowed some blood while under and the nurse had to use her hands in my mouth to keep me from biting my tongue. I guess I bit the hell out of her finger.

The only thing I remember is the staff waving to me as I left and one nurse had a HUGE gauze bandage around one finger. :p

I had mine out when I was 24. I'd had chronic tonsillitis throughout my childhood. I finally got the mother-of-all-throat-infections. The DOC nailed the infection with a bazooka antibiotic (since I'd become basically immune to all the other stuff because I'd taken so much in my earlier years), then put me in for a tonsilectomy.

It was done under a local: I was awake and watching the whole thing in the Doc's head reflector. "First we do the lateral suspensory ligament *snip*.... then the inferior *snip* then we put a lariat around the tonsil, so it doesn't slide back down your throat.....then the superior....a little extra tissue...*snip**snip*......repeat for the other side...

The whole procedure had me in the OR for MAYBE 20 minutes, tops...

When he pulled the tonsil, if felt like when you half-swallow a strand of speghetti, then pulll it out...

Got 150 Demeral/75 Visterol and Atropine for pre-op meds, A KVO IV of Normal Saline for an emergency line, and a shot of aerosol Cocaine to deaden my throat.

Ice Cream for lunch (after the Coke wore off), Jello and soft stuff for dinner, discharged the next morning ..... and a Whopper for lunch ... well, one bite of a Whopper...then soft *non-salty* stuff for lunch, dinner, breakfast for a few days......

You usually get a anti-nausea drug too. You end up swallowing a fair amount of blood, and that upsets some peoples stomachs.

Get it done. It nowhere near the hassle of antibiotics, it keeps you from building a tolerance to antibiotics, and you'll never spit up another little white pus-pill ......

I had mine out last year at age of 27. It wasnt too bad except (must mention I am UK based);

The doctors tried to quarterize my nose at the same time, managed to convince them otherwise on the way to anasthetic

When I woke up they said ' oh thats good you had as worried when you went blue'

after I woke up they forgot to give me any Painkillers for 3 hours!

At 5.00 in the afternoon (come out of operation at 12-12.30) they gave me something to eat, at the same time they gave me a liquid - but I was still groggy and wasnt sure if I had to drink it or gargle it, so I asked a nurse and she said 'yes drink it' so I tried and this stuff was burning my mouth like a bastard so I watered it down, then the another nurse came other and freaked because it was just gargle and not for drinking as its used to dissolve any scar tissue!

6 days later, feeling ok I cough up something horrible and black with skin around it, then another etc. and by lunchtime 4 of these things. Turns out (after a checkup) that I healed quite quickly and the dissolvable stitches had fallen out before dissolving - and brining them up was a akin to a furball

I had mine out when I was 11. I used to fake sick a lot to play hooky from school. Well after they were removed i have been sick way more than before, and sicknesses last a lot longer it seems. Before I rarely actually sick.

I've had tonsilitis three times and each time they said it wasn't bad enough to warrent getting them taken out. I was put on some killer antibiotics and it went away within a couple days.

I had mine out 10 years ago at 26 along with my adenoids. The constant swelling of the tonsils and adenoids were closing off my Eustachian tubes. The pain was pretty bad, and lasted two weeks. I became very dependant on narcotic pain medication, and had a hard time weening off of it. (keep your Rush jokes to yourself :p) However, I get FAR fewer colds and FAR fewer sinus and ear infections now. So, in the end, it was worth it.

Had them out when I was like 8. I'd say it was worth it. I couldn't imagine being awake and having it done.

It was very easy and quick, fairly painless. Just one note of caution....if you are one of the small percentage of people that bleed when the scab falls off it can be a little scary. Fresh blood is bright red...and it literally squirts out of your throat when that happens.

If you find yourself bent over a sink.."leaking" blood, call a doctor. I didn't....and ended up swallowing enough blood that I felt my entire stomach warm up and had to choke to prevent myself from throwing up the blood and further irritating the throat.

Had mine out along with my adnoids when I was 10. It was worth it in my opinion. The only bad part was vomiting up blood for 10 minutes when I woke up in the recovery room. Other than that it was painless.

Got them and my adenoids taken out when I was 18. The entire eating ice cream and jello thing was a load of bull, at least for me. I think I dropped an easy 10 pounds, maybe a hair more. The fun part was the prescribed liquid codiene/tylenol; uber yummy.

Unless your tonsils are really bothering you and your Ear, Nose, Throat doc thinks then need to come out, don't worr about it.

And, no, you do not get to keep them.
