Feels like you'd rather burn to death. It's unavoidable, unimaginable pain that you can do nothing about. You basically scream and roll around suffering helplessly in pain until the stone has passed. My gf's little brother passed out twice due to the pain on two separate ocassions.

Which is what I'm dealing with, except it is more like pushing/pulsating pain. Very lower back and radiating out to the sides?

What caused yours do you know? How old were you?

Renal colic is the term used to describe the pains associated from kidney stones. It has been likened to childbirth because of the excruciating nature of the pain.

* Pain

o Stone pain is sudden, severe, and sharp when it begins and later will come and go over time as the stone moves.

o The location where pain is felt is largely a result of where your kidney stone lodges.

o You may feel pain in the lower portion of the back or in your flank on one side. Frequently, it will shoot toward your groin on the same side.

o It may become very difficult for you to find any position that is less painful, no matter how hard you try.

o Usually, people with kidney stones will be seen pacing about or moving all around on the bed.

* You may feel sick to your stomach, and most people will vomit.

* You may be cool, clammy, and sweaty with a pale appearance to your skin.

* You may or may not notice any blood in your urine during these symptoms.

* Depending on the location of the stone or any infection in your urinary system, you may also notice burning with urination or more frequent urination and the need to go hastily, with only small amounts of urine resulting.

* Fever is not common and may represent an infection in addition to the kidney stone.

I mean how often does this happen to someone who is 22? It came on all of a sudden, kinda like someone grabbed your balls or something, but the pain isn't too sharp yet.

Yeah, it could kind of be described as pulsating, I guess. (Edit: yes, very lower back and out to the sides - edit2: mine was mostly only on one side)

I'm not sure what caused it (actually this thread just reminded me to leave a message for my doctor - I've been meaning to go in for a follow-up). It was one month ago (approx.), and I'm 20.

People aged 20-60 years more frequently have kidney stones, with 0.2% of Americans presenting annually.

if it gets too bad, check into an emergency room
they'll dope you up on morphine when it passes
or do a lithoplaxy

either way, the important thing is you'll be high

Drink lots of water, take some NSAIDs and call your doctor if you develop a fever. If you develop uncontrollable pain in your back or side or have a burning sensation when you urinate go to the hospital. Or if your urine is cloudy and smells bad.

I consider myself to be pretty badass, but even I fell to the floor writhing in unbearable pain when I got a kidney stone last year.

I had a neighbor who had them. He was also in shot in the Vietnam war... he said the kidney stones hurt worse than when he was shot.

You will also get feverish with lots of sweating and be barely able to move the closer you get to passing it. I recommend the fetal positon for those times.

That's what I did...

They hooked me up to an IV (I'd been vomiting constantly for the previous few hours), gave me some sort of pain medication at the time (I forget what - but it helped a lot), did a CAT scan, (had already taken a urine sample earlier), and I forget what else.

They ended up prescribing me antibiotics (to prevent infection) and Vicodin.

I went to get dinner with a friend -- on the way home I started noticing it, and immediately passed it off as just being full or something like that. Once I got home and it didn't stop and it kept building in intensity -- it basically felt like someone had poked me in the balls. It isn't too bad yet, but not exactly a fun fvcking time. Thanks for the well wishes - I'm hoping it isn't kidney stones.

your stone was probably below the size limit to do the lithoplaxy or surgury
count youself "lucky" you were supposed to be able to pass it

if it were me i'd say screw the textbooks, no way am i giving birth to a fricking rock

Yeah, mine started after a few hours after I ate one night too (I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, that's just when it happened). I tried to lay down and take a pain killer to sleep, having no idea what it was, but the pain just kept getting worse, and I couldn't get comfortable at all. After I realized it wasn't getting any better, I hauled my ass into the emergency room (this was at 12am and in a small college town, so I drove there in like 5 minutes). Definitely something I don't wish to repeat.

Good luck.
