I don't think there should be problems installing any HSF in the CM690 when it can fit a thermalright ultra-120 extreme (though you can't place a fan on the upper slot on the side panel but who does that anyway).

Would it be safe to install the heatsink with the case still in the motherboards? Some of the reviews on newegg said they did, but I'm not sure. Considering I'll also have to remove the CPU to take the old thermal paste of it.

Wait, I'm hearing different things. Am I supposed to take the thermal paste off my CPU when installing a new heatsink?

I just installed one on an E2180. It went on super smooth for me out of the case. The HS comes with pre-applied thermal compound. Clean your CPU and hook it up!

So take it out of the case? Argh, don't want to have to remove the wires and stuff all over again. Oh well.

wait! you don't have to!

you can just use a screwdriver and turn the push pins in the direction of the arrow. After that pull the pins out of the hole and rotate the Heatsink then voila. its out.

Just ordered it. Hopefully it works good. it should work better than what I'm getting right now. I'll probably try and mount it with the motherboard on first and see how I can do it.

To answer your question directly, you should take the old heatsink off, then wipe off any thermal paste left on the processor with isopropyl alcohol and a coffee filter/q-tip. Then place the new heatsink on... No motherboard-removing required.

You should be ok to install the Freezer 7 once or twice with the mb installed, but the pins are fairly soft plastic and can bend sideways if they aren't aligned in the hole when you click them. The F7 will fit in the CM690 fine, even with the side panel fans installed.
