My husband (mid 30s) had one put in by the military doctors because of fluid build up and infections. He said it was the most painful procedure he had done. The tube fell out a year later and he just had his adnoids, tonsils and uvula removed to help with the hearing. I thought that was weird, but he's quite happy he didn't have to have another tube put in.

Make sure you go to a good Dr. to avoid having scarring issues. I had extensive scarring which led to the development of a cholesteatoma that worked its way into my mastoid bone and displaced my hearing bones. Now that was painful.
