I was lucky enough to be born with 3 baby teeth that have no adult teeth under them :( One is beginning to have problems, so it is gonna need to be pulled. My main option was to have it replaced with a tooth implant. It guess its a process where the surgeon drills a small hole into your bone, and puts basically a small rod with threads on the end of it into the bone...lets the bone set it for 4 months, then screws a crown on top of it. It is supposed to last a lifetime...Id hope so, after seeing how much it costs!

My only question...will I be in good enough shape to drive myself home afterwards? (anyone who has had it done before). He said I will only get local anesthetic, so I dont think Ill be groggy, but I have no idea. I would also like to drive to the airport to pick up my friend that same day if I am able to...but if I find out I will be totally out of it, I may reconsider :p

Update: Had the procedure done this morning. They didnt use gas at all, just numbed me up good with Novacaine. Of course I didn't feel a thing, and they put a towel over my eyes so I didnt have to see anything. Only thing that was weird is that whenever he would drill, I could definately tell that my mouth was filling with blood...that was a bit unsettling. They seriously took upwards of 10 xrays...that got annoying, but I suppose it needed to be done. Overall an easy process...doesn't hurt much now, just gotta take motrin and antibiotics to keep it clean. Glad I had it done...just gotta wait 4 months for the crown now :( :p

haha and yeah, at the end he definatly used a ratchet to tighten the implant....it was quite an interesting sight :p

I drove home after mine, it was just a local like you were getting a root canal or something. I've had mine for about a year and a half and I don't even know it's there anymore.

I have had mine a fairly long time, now. Over 5 years.

I would have been OK to drive home, but the surgeon recommended that I not drive, just in case.

Wait 'till you see it! I have to say that staring up the shaft of a screwdriver as a mechanical engineer-cum-oral surgeon twists a self-tapping screw into my jaw but is one of the most surreal experiences I will probably ever have.

Juice Box,
I am anxious to hear how it turns out for you. I was in an auto accident about 20 years ago, and damaged my front tooth when I hit the steering wheel. In the last few years, the root began to be reabsorbed and recently had to have the tooth pulled. I need to wait several months before having an implant, but I am curious to hear more about it from someone who has undergone the procedure.

Good luck and best wishes for you.

Dave

That sucks Dave, are you wearing a flipper in the mean time?

Oh, and Juice Box, you'll be fine, when I had one done, all I got were a few shots of novicaine [sp?] to numb the area. When they take out the little ratchet to screw the implant into your jaw bone, you'll know how a car feels! :p

I've got one tooth like that, with no adult tooth underneath. One of the smaller molars.

I'm 27 and it is still hanging in there, can I ask how old you are?

That's how it worked for me. My regular dentist put the "tooth" on. The surgeon just did the implant itself.

My insurance refused to pay a penny since I could have gotten a bridge for less. They did not care that 2 oral surgeons, an orthodontist and a dentist all recommended an implant over a bridge.

Total cost was around $5000.

yeah, i go back to the surgeon on more time, then my dentist will make and put on the crown in 4-5 months...I wanna say its around $5000....but if you argue with the insurance company you may be able to get some help...as an implant will last a lifetime, whereas a cheaper bridge will tend to break and fall out in a few years...its a much better long term investment

I had it done as well. Just got the cap on a few weeks ago. The put in the screw when I had my wisdom teeth pulled so I didn't see any of that (lucky me :)). Mine implant scheme was a mess. I had 5 dentists involved. I had my orthodontist, my "child" dentist (don't know the formal term for that, as pediatrician-dentist didn't sound right ;)), the oral surgeon, my adult dentist and the dentist that was doing the cap. Took forever to get through all of this. I got my first ortho device installed in 7th grade, and just got my braces on and my implant cap put on within the last 3 months, I am now a Junior in college, so it was 7-8 years of fugly smile for me. It was worth it though, I finally have strait teeth (and bite) and all of them :D.

I'm sure yours will look damn good too, my friends told me that they can't even tell the difference between real and not.

Good Luck :)

How much did you have to pay, what was the total, and what did insurance pick up (percentage, or base amount)?

GF needs something like this done and I'm looking forward to having to scroll to see the entire number you enter. :(

well, my parents covered it, but from what I overheard, the implant itself is around $2500 or so...and the crown that your dentist does is about $2000....Im assuming the total will be somewhere around $4000-$5000 for one....sadly, most insurance companys will cover 0% of it because a bridge is a much cheaper procedure, however, with a bridge the dentist has to shave down 2 perfectly good teeth to form it, and they usually only last a few years before they need replacing...so if you can argue with them saying that a lifetime-lasting implant will be better in the long run, you may be able to get them to cover some of it
