Anyone had a GOOD experience w/ hotel wireless?

Last time I had hotel wireless, every 10 mins or so it would disconnect for like half a second, just enough to kick me off gaming servers, but reconnecting wasn't a big deal. Also, I could connect to all instant messaging servers, but not browse. Then I would be disconnected from all IM servers, but could browse fine

Now in another hotel, i'm trying to play WoW a bit, and my ping times are over 2 seconds, if i get a connection at all... Are there any reliable chains to stay at as far as wireless internet access?

And how much did you pay for this service? *hint* the ones where you pay for the service have the best wireless/internet service

Wireless is slow. Get over it. You can't control the airwaves and you can't control how others are using those airwaves. For all you know somebody near the AP or you fired up a microwave.

Wireless is slow and unreliable.

Best wireless I had was at a Hilton in Niagra Falls CA. It pretty much stinks anywhere else. Most of them use crappy Linksys wireless routers on either end of the hall instead of using professional access points and ceiling mount omni-antennas like you're supposed to :|

It varies for me...when I'm doing auto shows, we're usually at the nicer chain hotels who all charge for the wifi. I try to find the password somehow or otherwise hope that there's an open network around. Just this last week, I stayed at a Wingate (owned by Wyndham now) in Appleton for Airventure and the wifi was great. Too bad my laptop's too slow to play anything.

I worked in the banquet dept. at a full service Marriott for awhile. A lot of Marriotts and hotels use a 3rd party company called STSN, or Ibaun. (same company) Absolute complete joke to have all your internet services hosted and controled in a remote location across the nation.

I think they all have it hosted/managed remotely. I've noticed the better ones are the ones where you have to call for the security key vs. having it posted in your room. This room has a RJ45 jack, but i didn't bring a cable... who knows if it would be any better

oh, and here's the troubleshooting on the card.... what a joke

"If you are having problem connecting - connect closer to the door then once connected return to the desk"

wtf?

It overcomes the unusual roaming behavior present in all wireless clients and tries to "stick" it to a better AP.

Post in networking if you would like better answers.

i was more referring to the wording, grammar, and general positioning... the door puts me closer to the hall and farther away from the center of the hotel, but the desk is closer to the center of the hotel (and this hotel is only 3 floors across maybe 1 acre of land, so for all I know they have 1 AP at the check in counter)

I'm familiar w/ wireless channeling, bleed, interference, types of security and overhead involved, etc. as we have 11 APs in a 2 story manufacturing facility. I understand what you are saying, but I'm sure you understand frustration brings out the asshat in all of us :) I guess I'm just going to have to start bringing my cellular card on trips.

Hehe I'm in Guangzhou..not in a hotel, but stealing internet from someone who didn't know better :/
I would go to the internet bar, but they wouldn't let me plug in my laptop and there are people smoking there.

Hotel wireless does indeed suck...then again I expect that. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in this hotel until Aug 17. :(
