it was a good board in its day, but its pretty dang old

based on amd 760 chipset, and no it doesnt have agp/pci lock

it was a pretty good overclocker back in its day... but by todays standard its not much of an overclocking board

**edit to add**
also i dont think it supports the athlonxp tbred or barton (although tbred would probably work, it just wont be supplied the correct voltage)

too bad, well I'll have to keep looking then :)
see Im looking for a board with some OCing and a must pci/agp lock (Im very affraid of loose pcis and agps :) ) and that can take 1gb of registered ram per each dimm

Thanks

you dont need agp/pci lock to safely overclock (but it helps :) )

any board that has multiplier adjustment can be overclocked and still leave the pci/agp bus in spec

Id like to OC using the FSB
my T-bird 1.33 showed a max of 1700 under asus probe (10x170 and that will make the ram run at 340 and thats nice too :) )

if you are going with an amd cpu and you want pci/agp lock then your only option is an nforce2 based motherboard

actually Id like one of those, but I cant find one that will support 1gb of registered ram per each dimm :(

why in the world do you want registered ram?

its designed for servers not desktop systems... plus it costs more and is much slower performing

if you need agp/pci lock and support for 1gb registered dimms then your only options is going with an opteron or athlonFX and a socket940 motherboard

but be prepared to spend a lot of $$

athlonFX 51 costs around $750
or 1.4ghz opteron is about $250
and socket940 boards start at around $200

here are your options :)

if you want to use the registered dimms then you will need to get a server board

1. you can get a dual socketA board (based on the 760mp or mpx chipset) they cost around $200... it wont have agp/pci lock, but it will support the athlonxp

2. you can get a socket940 and it also costs around $200.. it will have the agp/pci lock, but you will need to buy a new socket 940 cpu also

nope not really, if you look you find :)
the a7m266 takes 1gb reg per dimm and the gigabyte 7dxr does too, so there should be a better one that will take regs as well, I just gotta keep looking :)

D

P.S. my K7S5A which is far from a server board will also take regs as well, but only lower density modules (I mean even 1gb as long as they are low density, the manual says 512max :) )

i was thinking the 760mp/x was the only socketA chipset that supports registered dimms.... but i totally forgot the regular amd760 chipset also supports registered dimms

if you really do want to use those registered dimms you have and keep the cost down. then your best choice is probably the original board you asked about, the asus a7m266

by the way the ecs k7s5a is based on the sis735 chipset... this chipset only supports unbuffered dimms (not registered)

you mentioned the manual for the k7s5a?? i just checked it and it doesnt say anything about registered dimms

since the type of memory supported is a function of the chipset you should be able to use any amd760 based board and it should have support for 1gb registered dimms per dimm slot

look all you want, but the only socketA boards that support agp/pci lock are nforce2

and for 1gb registered dimm support you will need a amd 760 or 760mp or 760mpx based board... below is a list of boards using the 760 chipset
Abit KG7
Aopen MK7A
Asus A7M266
Biostar M7MIA
Chaintech CT-7KJD
DFI AK76-SN
EPoX 8K7A+
FIC AD11
Gigabyte GA-7DX(R)

are you sure its not an unbuffered / ecc? cause the sis735 does support both ecc and non-ecc

there were lots of rumors about the epox 8k7a and 8k7a+ as having a 1/5th divider (meaning at 166mhz fsb the agp and pci would drop back down to spec)

but i dont remember if it turned out to be true or not

I have an Epox 8K7A. It does not have a 1/5 PCI divider. It only goes to 1/4 (i.e. 266 FSB). However, I did find a beta BIOS that has official support for Athlon XP/MP processors up to 2400+ (266 FSB only). I'm currently running a T-Bred XP 1700+ on it.
