Anyone good at networking & XP??

Can I network my computers- Win 98 running SetiQ on one, and a client on XP (Home or Pro- reccommend one)?? Is this possible?? I've heard XP is a b*tch to network with other OS.

It's possible. I'll have to check, but I was under the impression the Home version of XP was stipped of some of the networking features of Pro.

But it is possible to network them. What do you want to do with the networked PCs? How many PCs do you want to network together? Have both access and share the Internet connection? And will you want to just surf the Internet, play on-line games, etc? Will you want to share files/folders/printers between the PCs? what is your budget?

There are a number of ways to network them, depending on what your needs are. One of the simplest, basic ones is to put a second NIC in the XP box, connect the other PC NIC to that one, make sure they are on the same workgroup, and hard code an IP address range, such as 192.168.0.1 for the XP box, and 192.168.0.2 for the other one.

You can also purchase hubs/switches, and Internet gateways that will help make it easier to network.

I have a home network with XP Pro one one machine and 98SE on another. I use a Linksys router (since I have a cable modem), and have had no problems with the two at all, as far as playing games or sharing files and printers. However, I use Seti Driver rather than SetiQueue, since I'm only dealing with two machines. Work is a different story, and I use SetiQueue, but at home, I'm subscribing to the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) method. 😉

I've already got 2 computers networked using Win 98 on both. Router is a D-Link DI-704P. I have the print server working on it and sharing another printer off each computer. I would like to try out XP (I'm in need of a good headache). Basically I just want internet access for the 3rd also and file/print sharing- same as I have set up on my other 2. I'll probably get rid of the eldest computer after the new one is all set up.

I have a home network with 4 98SE boxes and 3 XP Pro boxes and there aren't any problems. I just set the XP boxes up like I did the 98 boxes and it works fine. However, I will be continuing to remove XP boxes from my network as I've found the OS to be horrible. I don't know if it is just me but everytime I install it I get asked different questions. Now in a recent install it didn't ask me about adding additional users so I had to add tehm after the install and even though I have the option selected for automatic login it asks me my password every time I start the thing up. I just think it is very flakey and I wouldn't advise doing the upgrade install at all.

As for your original question, I have a network running Win98, Win98SE, WinME, WinXP Home, and WinXP Pro. They all play together nicely.
My only complaint with XP networking is that browsing the network shares is WAAY slower than it used to be with older OS's such as Win98, etc... Perhaps I just have some settings wrong, though.

My main SetiQueue is on a Win98SE box and I have a couple of WinXP Pro boxes that connect to it. At another location I have SetiQueue on the WinXP box and have Win9x boxes connecting. So, as other have indicated it does work and is not a problem.

I REALLY like WinXP!! (my 2 cents worth!) 🙂

I agree with sduguid browsing the network in Win XP is really slow. I think I'm going back to 2K Pro or I'll just install XP another 6 times and hope it finally does it right.

Sorry for going against the grain here, but I am absolutely in love with Windows XP. I have used every single OS Micosoft has put out as well as Unix and Linux and it is BY FAR the best OS I have ever touched. Rock solid stability, amazing gaming performance, I haven't had to install drivers for pretty much everything, etc. I have it networked with several other computers in the house and it is great. I am using XP Home and the only features it lacks over XP Pro are:
1. NT Domain support
2. Multiple processor support
3. Remote assistance request ability (it can receive remote assistance requests though)
