Anyone gone to/going to DeVry Institute?

Right now I'm almost done with my A+ class. I just passed the hardware test last week. 🙂 and I'll probably then take Network+ when I'm finished.

But come this summer I'm going to look at going to DeVry and get started in a IT program...

Does any one know anything about DeVry.. Are they a good school, did you learn anything. Did it help you find a job.. Did you feel more "marketable" afterwards. Yada yada yada.....

I like the fact you can get a degree in a year and 8 months. No pottery class or foriegn lang. and what not bullcrap.

But I just don't know much about them. Any help would do..
 
I can get an AA or BA in half the time as you don't have to take all the "extra" classes that aren't needed for an IT world. I could always go back and get them but at my own conveinence. I also don't have the time to go to a 4 year school. I'm 36 and looking to change feilds so with a full time job anbd 2 kids already time is one thing I have very little of right now...
 
I graduated from DeVry in '84. The Bachelor degrees were in hot demand and their placement program is outstanding... (I had three good offers before I graduated) I did the BSEET degree and yeah, I learned alot, like how to use my head, for one thing. It's a good school.. I don't know about the specific program you're talking about, but I do recommend them highly
 
its a good school, don't be fooled by the cheesy tv ads they have that make it look second rate

everyone i know always makes fun of devry when i tell'em my older brother goes there just because they see those tv commercials 😉

beware though, the tuition is pretty high since it is a private institution 🙂 gluck!
 
I went to DeVry for two tri-mesters untill I decided to take some time off from it. I found it to be very easy. Professors are nice.

If you know Programming, Hardware, Operating Systems than it will be a breeze.
 
heh, i actually go to DeVry University ( hehe they're officially recognized as a private university now! lol )
i like it a lot there
people are nice and friendly and we all have a good time at the school

it ws nice for the time i did go, but the $$ is to much. I would take a few classes at the local colledge to help cut cost some and transfer those credits.
 
I had mixed experiences...Went to KC, graduated just a year ago. The program itself is ok, I did learn a fair bit, but I feel its a bit over priced. Also, the placement program? they HAVE one?! In other words, I had to find my own job. They sent me 1, yes ONE, job offer, which I had TOLD them wasnt what i had wanted. Course, the economy was just startin to really cool down then, so it may not be their fault.
To sum up
You do learn, its good at that
Its a bit over priced
No job placement (again, maybe not their fault due to economy)
 
I know of about 11 guys (they all lived together 🙂...damn rents expensive as hell there) that went to devry in Fremont and they all dropped out because of $$$$. For them it was a MUST to get a 2k loan and they just couldnt handle it. It was sad to see this too cause they were all very promising in the IT field. Now they're just bumming around at the local city college. One guy at least is graduating this semester because his parents were a little bit better off.

But from what I hear the classes were easy, but I'm not too sure if youre going into a specific program or through the whole classes deal.

What do you do now? Seems to me at 36 it's better to tryt and parlay something you know into something else.. Instead of going in debt for a very competitive technical position which IMO is low paid compared to other things you could do/.//
 
I graduated from KC's DeVry 2 years ago. It's a good school. I only got a AS in Electronics (I didn't really know what I wanted to do). Right now I work and go to school at the University of Missouri, working on my EE degree.

Comparing the two, DeVry's teachers were much better than the teachers at MU. DeVry has really good hands-on classes. Most people in my Junior level EE Classes don't know how to wire a bread-board.

DeVry's job placement isn't bad. You do have to work, you can't expect DeVry to come up with 20 different job offers while you sit on your ass. I wasn't looking for jobs because I decided to purse my EE degree, but I still had about 6 offers.

You can get a good job from DeVry. One friend is working at a Software company in KC doing simple troubleshooting, he makes around $37-38k. Another friend works at a Ammo manufacture making about $47k. That is with an Associates degree, too.

DeVry is pricey though, that is why I'm at MU, it's about half the cost of DeVry.
 
The tutition is no problem. The company I work for will pay for it all as long as I pass the classes. I,m looking to get out of my cyurrent job not because it is bad but because I work for Boeing and the 30,000 people they are laying off is not making the out look here so good. I have made it through the layoffs so far but the line is getting a lot closer to my ass then I would like. 🙂

The money is great but the skill level is not something that would make me marketable should I get layed off.

I thought the IT feild would be a great opertunity as there as hundreds of different ways to go in the feild. My Wife is in the field and does computing security and integrations and makes great cash. So I figure if I can start at even half what I make now I will have alot of room for growth.
 
Their T.V. commercials make me laugh. "I graduated from DeVry, and now I'm in hot demand for large companies such as IBM!"
