I've thought about going but it sounds like a pain in the arse...
Ready to say goodbye and good riddance to 2008? If you?re looking for a brief respite from the doom and gloom, Sin City?s hard to beat when it comes to seeing in the New Year. If you?re going to be among the 300,000-or-so expected revelers, or even if you?re just considering it, we?ve put together a few tips to help you enjoy a safe and happy night.
There are so many parties, concerts, and other events to choose from you could get overwhelmed ... Don?t! Just check out the New Year?s section in our Special Events listings for a one-stop-shop for all the options and how much they cost.
Transportation-wise, there?s good news and bad. The Strip?s closed to traffic (starting about 5 p.m. 'til ?) between Russell Rd. and Sahara Ave. (I-15 on/off ramps east- and westbound are also closed at Tropicana, Spring Mountain, Flamingo, and Sahara). That means no Deuce Bus on the Strip (it detours via the I-15) and forward planning if you?re driving. Good news is the CAT bus is free from 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 till 6 p.m. Jan. 1, the Monorail runs for an extra hour (until 3 a.m.), the Taxicab Authority lays on a bunch of extra cabs and, best of all, Designated Drivers is offering a FREE service from 5 p.m. Dec. 19 through New Year?s Day. They cover the whole area, including Henderson and Summerlin, so there?s NO EXCUSE to drink and drive. The number?s 702-456-RIDE -- keep that with you in a safe place. (They?re offering this service although they?re about $20K short this year, so they?d appreciate your donations at designateddriversfoundation.org.) You?ll find more information for all these services, including phone numbers and maps, in our Transportation section.
The Strip casinos close their doors around 9 or 10 p.m., so if you don?t have a room key (or a verifiable restaurant reservation), you won?t get in (nope, not even to use the restrooms, in fact, especially not for that). If you?re staying downtown and don?t have a ticket (i.e., wristband) for the Fremont Street party, count on using the back entrance to your hotel.
This year the fireworks show?s going to be slightly different than previous years, since they?re firing the pyrotechnics from ground level instead of hotel rooftops. Whereas we?ve previously suggested heading west up the hill, or trying to get a viewing spot atop the parking lots of the Las Vegas Hilton, Ellis Island, or McCarran airport, this year?s official word is that, ?the best viewing areas will now be ground level on the Las Vegas Strip,? so your guess is as good as ours?
