I got back from Greece on Sunday afternoon, slept for a few hours to get over jet-lag, then jumped in my car and drove the almost-400-mile trip from Philly to Blacksburg and went straight to class.

That depends on the attendance policy at your particular college Martin. :)

CS classes at VT drop you automatically if you aren't there the first day, and all my courses but one have their first assignments/projects due over the second week.

You need to go to a better school :p

Due to some problems I was having at the time, I skipped the first month from my second year. Also for my humanities elective, I took a first year history course, but lost 10% of my mark automatically because I never went to tutorial.

What can I say, I am not big on attendance :)
