Im going to a RHCP concert in Champaign in March. It's so close to the university, I thought it'd be nice to hang out there for a night - how is the nightlife? Lots of house parties or is there a place where everyone goes on the weekends or what?

Thanks.

I graduated last year. Are you coming with other people? And when in March?

Graduated 04'....if you like bars, there are a ton on Green Street. Legends is a typical bar, Joes if you want to dance, Kams/CO's is you want to score with freshman, Station and Gully were a big frat/sorority bar when I was there (lots of "talent"), Firehouse opened after I graduated so I can't give you any idea about it, Brothers is a typical bar too, Clybourn is similar to Joes...That's about all I can remember about them when I was there.

There are always parties or frat parties going on. Also, since you mentioned March, are you going around St. Patty?s day? It gets kind of nuts on campus around then and there definitely be parties.

My roommate went to UIUC, graduated '04 and then got his Masters in Accounting. All he can talk about is how much he partied.

Firehouse is must like Brothers in that it's two tiered, but there's really nothing to do there. At most bars there's at least darts or billiards, but at Firehouse, you only have TVs. If you come with good friends and only plan on using cards or drinking to keep you busy, you should be fine.

I think Gully's closed recently. Last time I walked past the place was emptied out.

Looking at the dates for Unofficial and the RHCP concert, they coincide. The OP will be in for a wild ride :D

Ah, so they do. OP: You must come EARLY on March 2nd then. Friday is Unofficial St. Patrick's Day. Everyone starts drinking about sunrise and doesn't stop. Campus gets ridiculous. You shouldn't have any problem finding parties if you walk around. Most of them will be between 1st and 6th streets, and south of Green.

Bars:
Legends - typical chill bar, darts and pool too
Brothers - similar to legeds, darts and pool, but a bit more dancing and more active overall
Joe's - dancing
Firehaus - pretty similar to Legends but less to do and slightly higher class
Murphy's - chill Irish pub, pool and darts in basement
Station - frat bar
Gully's closed
Bar Louie - upscale chill bar, IMHO boring and expensive
Clybourne - dancing, I boycott the place cause of the asshole bouncers and management
CO's - cheap drinks, freshmen sluts, some dancing
Kam's - similar to CO's but more sports orientated

Don't bother going to downtown Champaign on the 2nd. Stay on campus! It's wild. Oh and watch out for cops when jaywalking. They ticket that a lot.

Good ole Unofficial St Patrick's day. Weren't they talking about trying to shut that down last year? As if that'd actually stop it though.

Yeah they were. But what can they do? The bars can already open at 11 AM if they want to. I suppose the city could stop them from opening at 8 or 9, but that's about it.

Heh, and even if they did stop the bars from opening early in the morning, we all know what will happen. Early in the week stockpiling of liquor and beer for at home consumption. They can't stop Unofficial, they can only hope to contain it!

Oooh, I know! The student government can issue a statement denouncing the "holiday." Because everyone knows that ever since they found a bullshit way to prevent a cartoon gnome and snail from winning their elections that the student government is nothing but the very definition of integrity.

I love how all the student groups "supported" moving all the student football seats to the worst seats in the stadium. Go student government!

I've been here since 2001 and what stood out for me more was that this was the city of Champaign talking about doing stuff, not just the University.
