Anyone getting iPad mini 4?

Just curious.

The mini 3 really shouldn't have existed since they didn't update the processor and RAM, it made no sense to update my mini 2 just for TouchID.

I didn't catch if the 9/9 keynote said anything about improved camera or WiFi, but an A8 or A8X with 2GB RAM and Touch ID would be a nice bump from A7+1GB and no TouchID on my mini 2.

I have split view on my Mini 3.

My mini 2 does also. I hear that's a limited version of the side-by-side multitasking the iPad Air 2 and other 2GB iPads will have. I'd have to go back and watch the WWDC keynote to be sure...

No you don't. You have Slide Over:

Slide over is basically just a task switcher, with both tasks on the same screen, but only one usable at a time.

This is Split View:

In split view both screens are active with both screens responding to touch input independently, and even simultaneously.

Right. That's exactly what I'm saying. Only 2GB devices have the full implementation. I'm sure his mini 3 does the same thing as my mini 2 since they're both A7 and both 1GB.

I disabled it almost immediately on mine because it was indescribably irritating that I could no longer swipe to go forward in Safari. No reason to have a thin strip for Messages / Maps if 2/3 of the screen is dark and not accessible. May as well just shortcut to the full Messages / Maps / Notes / etc.

Is Split View only with Apple apps or will be it open for 3rd party devs?

3rd party, but the apps have to be updated. For example, IIRC MS Office was demo'd at the event in Split View (but that version of MS Office isn't available yet).

My main question though is if two instances of the same app can be running. So far there is no option to do Safari + Safari.

Excellent, though I don't have any Apple hardware that can do Split View, but I'm glad to hear it's open to 3rd party devs.

Will the 6S have Split View? I feel like the answer is no, which would be a shame.

No Split View or Slide Over on the iPhones.

Picture in Picture and Slide Over are available on iPad Pro, iPad Air or later and iPad mini 2 or later. Split View is available on iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4.

Was there a big sale on the mini 2 or something? I just picked up a second iPad Air 2 recently because of a $100 off sale up here in Kanuckistan, and because the rumour sites were saying the iPad Air 2 wasn't going to get updated.

However, the difference here is that the iPad Air 2 already has Touch ID and 2 GB RAM.

Probably just the appealing size of the mini lineup, combined with the fact that mini 3 costs significantly more than mini 2 and pretty much just has Touch ID.

Kinda bugs me that it's considered the 3rd-generation iPad mini. It should have been called "iPad mini 2 with TouchID." It should have been only $50 more. Some people like TouchID, but most wouldn't pay extra for it unless it was required for corporate security or whatever.

I'll get one eventually, using a Mini 2 right now, it's my "go to" device.

Will wait for a sale before I upgrade though, I do like to buy the models with cell radios since they have GPS.

I think it's the size. The regular iPad is too big IMHO, while the Mini is just right.

Oh and the price of course.

I find the mini hard to read for extended periods when surfing. The bigger screen of the regular iPad is much easier on the eyes. The Pro would be even nicer, but that size is too awkward (judging by my minimal experience with the large Android tablets).

The mini's size is fine for on-the-go full-screen video though.

To go slightly off-topic, the iPad Air 2 is $100 off at Staples.com through Saturday for all configurations. That's as good a deal as you'll find on Black Friday (typically only the 16 GB model is discounted and quantities are limited).

Target has $75 off all iPad Air 2 configs (including LTE models). There's some mention of a 15% off "college registry coupon" that makes the deal even sweeter but not everyone will have access to that.

I'm not in the market for an iPad but I wonder if Apple will not update the Air 2 until next fall? That just seems really weird to me, and I wonder if they'll push out an Air 3 in 5-6 months (there are currently no rumors to suggest this).

Maybe this will make you feel better about the mini 4.

The mini 4 holds its own for single threaded work, not surprisingly. The Air 2 still wins for memory speed though.
