Forever, I thought it was becasue of ICQ through Trillian.

But I just got one without even having Trillian running .. so I decided to investigate.

Looks like it's because of the Windows Messenger (not MSN Messenger)

Anyways, figured out how to disable it.

I got my first one yesterday out of nowhere at work, wasn't doing anything. I use opera for my browser and it was sitting at my homepage (Yahoo) for like a half hour and a messenger ad thing randomly came up. I disabled the Messenger service and doubt I'll see any more.

all you need is someone's IP or DNS (which is easy to get on IRC for example) and go to command prompt and type:

net send (ip address) (message)

i do it to my friends just to mess with them

No matter how many websites run articles, and how many people talk about it, there will still be people completely oblivious to Windows Messenger service.... *sigh* what can you co.

joohang if you use Winsk/XP it's as simple as disabling the Windows Messenger Service, or you could edit sysoc.inf and remove all "hide" occourences and uninstall it completely, that way you will never get some bastard spyware program that changes it back to Auto....

For me, it has only happened twice since I opened up my DMZ host on my router. When I'm not open, I do not get them.

I have the port un-routed on my router, so I'm safe.

I like to send messages to people using that. You send them a message pretending to be Microsoft saying that we've detected that you're running a pirated version of windows and that their IP address has been logged and will be traced back to them in a matter of days. They should expect a letter in the mail informing them of the consequences (ie: lawsuit). It's hilarious how fast some people will log off AIM after recieving one of those (they shut their computer off).

Sounds fun... now how could I get IP numbers from some of those people on my buddy list?

Whenever I open a DMZ to one of my computers, that PC gets them within a few minutes.

I get them once in a while, but I'm going to leave messenger service enabled. Why? My friends and I use it all the time. We all have RoadRunner, and we opened the DMZ host to our computers. Nobody ever shuts down... we may exit all of the 'chat' programs, but net send never fails :)

It's also good for informative messages in a corporate environment, assuming there is no other messaging system running.
